I have a little single shot 22 LR made by J.G.A. Zella-Mehlis Germany, bolt action rifle. Might this rifle be converted to .22 Magnum by a competent gunsmith.

If so what would be required?

Thanks.

It would require a reamer with the pilot ground to fit your tight .22 barrel, a go gauge, and the extractor altered. I think the bolt face is flat so it would not require altering... If the bolt face is recessed then it would also require altering... and a letter signed stating that you take full responsibility for this alteration and if the rifle is not strong enough and fails you accept the consequences.

Bore diameter is different between the two calibers. .223-.2235/ vs. .224 for the Magnum.

The twist rate is generally 14 for the mag, 16 for the long rifle.

Then you need to have the bolt face altered. The Mag rim is larger.

Not really a very good investment.

But fill yer boots. It's only money. Your money. :D

I've done five of them. The jga barrel metal is soft, and be careful it's not bulged in the first place. Newer anschutz without the cocking knob are better. The bolt face already accepts the magnum so it's a half-hour job and works just fine. Yes, the pilot had to be cleaned-up just a hair.

I rechambered my Savage over/under to .22mag just because .......works fine . it just took a little work to get the ejector to fit and all is good. I have the finish reamer with the undersize pilot if anyone wants to try their own

matti,
Why is the newer anschutz better......have to do with the metal??

Mine does have the "cocking knob" as you stated.....barrel / action is fine.

Have you done one like mine? Sucessfully? Safely?

Thanks for the info fellas, wanted to know if it was a possiility, and so it appears to be.
