I have a blind mag in my .270 that currently holds a single shot mag follower. There is a side saddle on the rifle that carries 5 rounds and I can easily put another round in the chamber fairly quickly. This rifle was set up more for precision shooting with a heavy barrel and new light trigger, etc. I believe it was used for coyote hunting. I want to use it for hunting moose/deer/bear. Does anyone hunt with a single shot mag follower? I am thinking of removing it but on the other hand kind of like it.

It would be much easier and faster to load a Ruger No1 with gloves one, rather than a bolt action single shot.

I would change it for hunting season...Nothing like watching your moose stumble into the boreal while you're trying to fumble another round in...Just sayin'...:)

You do have a point there. Never thought about the gloves. :) Even though the single shot mag follower allows you to easily drop a round in I could see wearing gloves causing a problem.

I'd take it out. It's just as easy to carry the extra cartridges in the magazine than in a side saddle. MUCH faster to reload if the need arises.

Just make the first shot count. :)

The guy who sold it to me told me he just made one shot kills and I don't doubt him it's me I doubt. I took the mag follower out and it cycles fine with four in the mag and one in the chamber. I feel more comfortable this way for now. No excuse though, I have to get out to the range and get good with my new toy. I may put the one shot mag follower back in for precision shooting. :)

I hunt with single shots, but also with magazine fed rifles. It should be easy to replace this with a normal magazine follower and spring. It won't change the accuracy and you can still single load if you really, really, want to.

There is only one problem with repeating guns, rifle or shotgun and that is that second shot. Too many guys will rush the first shot and jack another round in the chamber as fast as they can. I've been guilty of it myself, but more so with a shotgun. If I've been startled or caught a critter coming in at mach 2 with it's ass on fire without seeing it, I'm usually firing that first round in vain. I'm trying to condition myself away from this but it's not always easy.

If you tell yourself you have one round in your .270 and one round only, you might be inclined to wait a bit more for the right angle and in turn you just might become a better rifleman. And as good as anyone is, they could always be better. Try it as is, if you don't like it you could always try somthing else later.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense.

What helped me with my Swedish Mauser is to visualize 3 to 5 bucks falling out of an imaginary hole in my pocket every time I pulled the trigger, that slowed me down a bit. :p :D
