Does anyone make a single shot that is just a double with one barrel? Like say half of a Beretta 686 or Merkel 140? It seems to me that single shots are all quirky in one way or another, and it would be nice to find one that just works and takes down the same as your average double barreled shotgun without tilting blocks or decocking levers or trigger guard unlocking etc. Is there anything out there?

In the economy group is the Handi Rifle and a used Savage 219. There was a short lived Mossberg SSI but seem real hard to find. Baikal, IZH-18M, also produces a break action, not handled one but considered a real Russian. Built rough and tough, they even have a 45-70 double rifle. Rossi makes a single shot comparable to the Handi.

The nicest affordable versions are made by Thompson Center imo.

Thompson Center used to make the TCR which has a striking resemblance to the K95. You see them used from time to time. Beautiful little rifles.

Haenel is another Euro brand (owned by or affiliated with Merkel) which has a break-action single shot, the model 9. Reminiscent of the Blaser and Merkel single shots, but less ornate and less expensive. Wolverine sells them...I just recently got one from them and so far I have nothing but good things to say about it.

In terms of value for price, the H&R single shots are hard to beat.

I have a Savage 219 story ( true ! )
Several years ago my late Brother and his Wife were hunting Mountain Caribou a long way East of their home in Faro, actually not far from the Yukon / NWT border.
Brother was carrying his pet 300 WSM that he had built and Katie carried her favourite rifle, a scoped and re-stocked 219 in 30-30.
Second day of their hunt Katie made a 200 yd. shot on a beautiful Bull and because the weather turned nasty they curtailed their hunt.
Moral of the story.... never underestimate the 30-30 cartridge in the hands of an experienced hunter.
Brother Charles referred to the Savage as " Katie's good luck rifle " as on numerous occasions she came home with the kill and Brother came home with a clean, unfired rifle.

Thanks. That BRNO Effect looks good for the price point. Handi Rifles have a pretty good reputation and I always wanted the HR Pardner in 20 gauge. Not fond of Baikal overall.

Merkel, Krieghoff, Blaser from Germany, many Austrian, French and Italian makers too. Google "Kipplauf" and you will find a lot of listings from Europe.
