Considering another build. I am kind of leaning toward a single shot rifle bored for a heavy working wildcat game cartridge based on the 458 Winchester. I presently own a 458 Winchester but think it would be nice to stock the shelf with different actioned rifle. I've heard the Ruger No 1 H had some problems with accuracy and stocks splitting. Looked at the Dakota - quite $$$$$. Any suggestions. Anyone in Canada make or supply actions of this type?

I'm playing with a #1 in 450-348 Ackley Imp., and so far results are quite gratifying. Cases are easily formed from 348 Win. brass and it easily exceeds 45-70 velocities, probably a tad less than a 458.
Accuracy with a 350 Hornady and a 490 gr. Lyman cast bullet have been well under the inch, somewhat better than expected.
I have yet to try the 500 gr. Hornady as I'm more than satisfied with the performance and recoil with the loads tested thus far.

No. 1 tropicals are very accurate. I've had a couple of Rigbys and a 460 WBY. I currently have a 458 on the way. The barrels are like truck axles. I've always had good luck with other No.1s too. Not so with a couple of Browning single shots.

If your goal is a big thumper in a single shot a Ruger #1 is your best choice. 98% of them will shoot better then their operator and the action is more than strong enough to take whatever you want to chamber it in. Your only other choice may be an Browning 1885, but for a big-bore, I would still choose a #1.

Winchester has a Shot show special out for this year in the 1885, .300H&H and .375H&H
Saw a 375 advertised down south for 1299.00. 28" barrel, with African sights, not drilled and tapped for scope though, and they are blued, not color cased like the BPCR models.
