Single shots for big game.

Looks like a really nice buy. Their stainless one in that chambering catches my eye sometimes. Whats it like to shoot it? Hope it lasts you a good long and trouble free time!

Used to hunt with a H&R "Buffalo Classic" single shot in 45/70 cause it had a cool nostalgic look to it. Had fun.

First deer I ever shot (in the 80’s) was with a Savage 99 in .243. After that I bought a Ruger No 1 in .338 and that was my go to hunting rifle for many years. Added a Browning B-78 in .270 Gibbs then started hunting with a flintlock. Other than that first deer, I have hunted exclusively with single shots. However, I recently bought a .500 BPE double rifle specifically for hunting so once I get a load tuned up for it I will be hunting with a repeater for the first time since my first outing. In the mean time, I will continue to hunt with muzzleloaders unless I decide to use my Sharps 45-90.

It was alot nicer too shoot than I expected, I think the heavy barrel and rubber butt pad seemed to take most of the kick out of it. But I could deffinatly see a new shooter picking up a bad flinch if they didn't know what too expect shooting it.

Got you!

From the bullet/powder weight and speed, looks like pretty much a 20 ga sabot slug

Most game is done with one well placed shot for sure, so no disadvantage with a single shot.
I near #### my pants at the retail price of the Traditions G3's currently, pushing $800, pricier then the CVA's.
I only have one break action single, Traditions G2 in 357mag, bought from Epps when they were blowing them out at $300.
It's lots of fun, I look at it like a 22lr for hunting with way more pop. 38spl is like 22lr, 357 is like 22 mag, not hard on the ears at all

Single shot only means you need to open the action to load an other round, you are not limited to only one shot… I’ve owned a few Ruger no1’s and shot a few moose with them, I really like them but I got rid of them cause I figured out after a while and after shooting other rifles that they didn’t fit me so well!
But love the simplicity, action length, handiness of a good single shot rifle!

I've got a Henry Single Shot in 243win, bought it for my kids and wife, they're a mix of right and left handed and the Henry is fully ambidextrous. Haven't taken it hunting yet but hoping my daughter will get her first crack at a deer next year with it.

I sure like them dropped Elk with .45-70 Ruger No.1 & New England Firearms Handi-Rifle (and lots of Grouse with H&R single shot .410). But prefer a rifle with a magazine in some situations.⚠️

I started myself down the single shot rifles a couple years back.

First one was the CVA 444, scout, takedown version. Was a great shooter, but was not able to take any game with it, even though I carried it for miles. I have a stock sleeve for extra ammo, and practiced quick reloading with it always, and even on range trips.

Really wanted a ruger #1 303 brit, but with them being hard to find, I convinced myself to just get a nice stainless #1 and then have it changed up to a 303 brit. I ended up getting a 204, and just fell in love with the platform. Unfortunately I ran into too many rifle projects and ended up selling the 204 before having it converted.

That is when I ran into a new stainless, laminate stock 450BM in the #1. It has now become my primary hunting rifle, and I was able to use it on some big game this year with my elk and moose.

The extra practice of quick reloading paid off as well, as I had to do a quick follow up with the elk this year. With some practice it is remarkable how fast you can reload a #1 with the empty cartridge being removed with the dropping of the lever.

After plenty of research, I ended up using the barnes 290 gr TEZ, muzzleloader tips, moving 2260 fps. Good out to 350m.

Even experimented with the .458 solid copper tips pushed through a few sizer dies to get down to .452. These worked fine as well at the range, and gave me options if I ran into hard to find bullets. I was able to find a few boxes of cheaper 300 gr flat point tips for range fodder as well, so I have plenty of practice at the range, for a decent price. Did some reloading work in the reloading forum as well if you want to see that.

I’ve got two Cva scout SS/TD. A compact 243 and a 35 whelen. Both have taken bears. Think the 243 will see deer season this year.

I love the simplicity of single shots. After hunting for 20 plus years in a muzzleloader only WMU for deer , I am quite comfortable with a single shot when I actually hunt with a rifle. I have a Ruger No. 1 in 7mm magnum but have never hunted with it and like the look of the Steven's 219 in 30-30.
