I bought an older single six with the 22LR cylinder it a while ago and have never shot it...its in great shape and doesnt look beat on at all...

I decided to take it out this weekend so I bought a box of Remington viper 22LR and hit the range... 1 in 5 rounds would fire, some would fire a second or 3rd time around...

the brass looks to be hit hard enough... but Im no expert...

the hammer doesnt seem to have the "authority" Id expect it to have.. but again, Im no expert, it just seems like the strike is a little bit gentle.

a little advice would be appreciated.

thanx folks.

How old? I have an old one, made in 1954, and a newer one and one possibility may be to do with the mainspring and it's attachment, especially at the top. On the newer one I have, on the top attachment for the mainspring there is a clip set-up on both sides. 'Sometimes' one of the side clips will be disengaged which supposedly serves to lighten the trigger pull.

On my older model, this clip set-up doesn't exist.
  • Suggestion # 1, take the grips off and check yours. If it is new enough to have this clip attachment and if one side is disengaged, reattach it.
  • If yours has this set-up and it is attached, or, if it is an older model like mine and doesn't have it,
  • Suggestion #2, get a gunsmith to check that the firing pin protrudes through far enough when the hammer falls, and
  • Suggestion #3, check the integrity/condition of the mainspring.
