With the cost of bullets at around $27.00 for a box of 100 303 .312 diameter, I can't afford to keep buying them. My dad has been casting bullets for years but he does not have a .312 sizing die to size the lead bullets to correct diameter. I went to Wholesale Sports in Lethbridge a while ago and they gave he a product number and an ordering number for a die. The number he gave me was for a H&I sizing die assembly. Is this the right die and will it fit in my dad's older Lymann 450 (he has had it since before i was born)? Also, does it include the top piece that actually presses the bullet into the die and does it also crimp the gas check on the base? Thanks.

I haven't heard of a Lyman 500. Lyman 45's, 450's I have. But I haven't seen everything either.
The H and I die do the sizing and push the bullet back out of the sizing die. The other part you are asking about is called the top punch (or nose punch) and is ordered separately to match the bullet nose your mould produces. If you are using a Lyman mould you should order the top punch that it requires. If it is another make of mould try the manufacturer of the mould. Lyman and RCBS top punches will fit either Lyman or RCBS lubricators interchangeably in my experience.

If it is a flat nosed bullet there are also punches made (usually by jobbers) specially for flat nose bullets and one will do a variety of flat nose bullets in the same or very similar calibers. For instance you could get by using a 30 cal flat point punch for a 32 special bullet but not necessarily the opposite as the punch does enter the sizing die to some extent.

What is the make and mould number of the mould your Dad has?

Not sure if Lee provides nose punches to fit Lyman/RCBS lubers or not Give them a try and see. If not find an RCBS or Lyman round nose punch or semi wadcutter punch which is close and use one of the heavy quick setting epoxy compounds ( not a glue but more like a putty like the gas tank repair stuff). Mix up enough to put in the nose punch and then set the punch down on a bullet that is part way in the sizing die. The excess squeezes out and you can wipe it away. When it sets you've got the right nose punch custom made and it will be ready in less than an hour.
