SJ Hardware No Jam Follower Jamming and Getting Stuck

So I ordered the S&J PowerFeed "No Jam" Combat Shotgun Follower Type 2 HiVis Green and it keeps jamming and gets stuck after the last round on my 870 tactical. I cleaned the inside of the mag tube and it still gets stuck when empty. Once it's unjammed it moves and loads freely. I put back the OEM orange Remington follower and it never got stuck after 50rnd of low recoil slugs. I put back the S&J Follower and only loaded 3 rounds and it got stuck at empty. When stuck, I'll need something to knock it loose cause.

Emailed S&J last week but I still haven't received a response yet and I totally understand that it's the Holidays. That is why I'm posting this thread and see if anyone has any inputs on my follower issue.

Thanks and Happy Holidays everyone!!!

The issue with those types of mag followers is that the design is all wrong. As in all factory followers, the spring should be pushing at the very front of the follower. The skirt follows along to keep it from being cocked from side to side much like the piston in an engine.

On the do called "No Jam" followers, the spring pushes further back which causes the follower to #### sideways. A tail is then put on to keep it from cocking. It doesn't make a lot of sense to design it wrong and then try to correct it by putting the tail on it.

Just my two cents.

Casey.

I'm curious as to what is a good replacement follower for anyone wanting to upgrade from the factory one?

I can't speak to the 870 version, but I replaced my Mossberg 590 follower with the offering from GG&G and it has functioned flawlessly for me the past couple years, and I shoot fairly often in 2 and 3 Gun.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Dave

My factory ones never jammed, but I bought an S&J to see what the fuss was about. (Remington ones feel cheap/flimsy) The no-jam is the only follower I've used that DID jam, so it hangs in a ziplock on the wall. Factory all the way, though I imagine the 870-hating fan club will have something to say about Remington getting it right.

Can’t say I’ve ever had a jam or hang up with either the factory Rem or any of S&J’s styles of delrin follower. If you’ve cleaned your follower and mag tube well, I’d have a good look at the mag spring or the condition of your shell stops.

OP,
Compare the shoulder configuration of the aftermarket follower to the OEM Rem 870 follower.

Brownells followers are a copy of the original in different color ed anodized aluminum.

As mentioned, the spring should set inside the follower so that the follower skirt will act like a piston ring to prevent binding.

Your mag spring should be approximately 6" longer than the mag tube when installed in the follower.

I turn my shotgun & lever gun followers from delrin.

I know $16.99 + shipping is not a lot of money but kinda sucks to have paid for something that performs worst than the original when it S&J states that it's supposed to be "the best on the market" and reduces jamming.

Sounds like you have a weak spring issue more so than a follower issue. Spring not exerting enough force on the last round? Spring too short? I’ve pulled out some pretty weak and wonky springs.

Have you installed an extension and the spring is a bit too short? Sometimes springs are cut down from longer ones going by length specified, but the spring turns out to be too weak.

Spring could be binding where the extension meets the mag tube. If you have a REM two piece extension, might be improperly installed where you end up with a gap where the extension meets the mag tube.

Get yourself a Wolff spring to match the extension length. Wolff springs have narrowed ends which hug the follower stem to keep the follower straight. They are made of stiffer wire too, so they don’t turn into a wonky pretzel after much use. I bet that will solve your problem.

I don’t like cutting springs. On a cut spring, the cut tip of the spring skews the stemmed follower and with a weak spring, might be enough to cause issues. Lube the inside of the mag tube a little bit too. Factory finished springs have an even end that sits flush with the base of the follower. The REM cupped followers hug the spring past the tip of a cut spring keeping it straighter. So that’s why your factory follower works better. We really need more info on what you have. Post some photos if you can.

It seems like you have the newest Remington 870 tactical or express. There are things I would change right away on that model unless you are getting a Police model.

-SJ hardware type 3 follower along with their 1m million mag tube spring, The 870 tactical spring and follower are cheaply made. Tent to jam and doesn't cycle fast enough for heavy load.
-Remington 870 Police steel extractor, this is the best upgrade on the 870 tactical.
-SJ hardware jumbo safety is a must as well.

Then shot the hell out of it and only replace thing that start to break down but I doubt in a few thousand rounds.

I bought the 870 tactical brand new and shot 200rnd slugs with it. The only thing I changed is the S&J No Jam Follower and also the police carrier Latch Spring.
The problem is either the original spring does not pair well with the S&J follower or the follower itself is defective. Like I mentioned previously when I put back the cheap orange OEM follower it works flawlessly.
