Is SK Standard Plus worth the extra money compared to CCI SV?

My LGS has SK for $69 a brick, is that a decent price?

I want to try something for shooting groups, and keep plinking with my cheap stuff.

Thanks

SK (Lapua) Standard Plus:

SK runs one production line with one manufacturing recipe for rim-fire match ammunition. Batches are rigorously tested and separated according to whether they meet exact standards for velocity and grouping, and get labelled as either Rifle Match, Pistol Match, or Standard Plus (or bulk Magazine). Basically you're shooting better stuff that just has like 1% too much variance in velocity.

Quite a proportion of Canadian shooters in ISSF disciplines (the casual competitors at least, not necessarily those *on* the Olympic team) use Std+ as practise ammo (and sometimes match). This doesn't mean it will be a shining star in your own rifle or pistol, but it tends to be pretty good in almost all. Like most European match ammo it's got a pretty slick lubricant on it, which burns off with a particular smell.

At today's prices for Thundercats and Yellow Bees and whatever, it's a wonder people don't just buy this.

The Canadian distributor, Hirsch Precision (a site sponsor in the banner block up top), is retailing bricks from the most recent container for $62,50 or $58,50 by the case. Your $69 is significantly less than Canadian Tire is selling this same stock for.

Where do you shop that you're getting CCI SV for cheaper than this? Do they have any CCI Pistol Match at rock-bottom prices too?

in my cz varmint there is a word of difference. the sk will outshoot cci sv by a wide margin. in my green mountain barreled ruger 10 22 it makes no difference. with the price of sk I think its well worth it.

SK (Lapua Std Plus) is great ammo. It always produces consistent tight groups in my BSA and Vickers Martini 22's, right out of the box. At $70 a brick, it is a target shooter's bargain. On the other hand, CCI Std Vel used to be great ammo, with similar results to the SK, but the CCI QC has dropped a lot in the last couple of years. It still groups tight, but only if it is weighed and the rim measured to sort out a decent amount of ammo that can be relied upon. The stuff that does not measure up is only good for plinking IMHO.

$69 a brick is a fair price. I think I paid $63
Last time from Nordic Marks man. Plus shipping of course. My savage BV loves standard plus and shoots very tight groups with it.My savage tr is less picky and shoots lots of ammo well.

Shoot what you can get... they both shoot equally well in all of my rifles... they are both consistently in the top five for any given rifle, with Wolf MT and CX.

SK has a slight advantage (and I do mean slight) in my Anschutz 1450, but otherwise...most of my guns seem to prefer CCI SV. Both are good though..and I'd consider finding either in brick quantity to be good fortune these days, though $69 is maybe a little steep. The SK leaves the hands feeling silky smooth. :)

As it happens I did a very simplified ammo test with 4 different SV ammos and a few of my better rifles recently. I found that the SK ammo did work quite a lot better in a couple of the guns than the CCI SV. But I also found that one of the rifles did better with the CCI than the SK. So it's a case of IF your rifle likes the SK better than the other brands then it is the right ammo for you. But you won't be "buying your accuracy" if you think that SK is automatically better than CCI SV.

I would say that it IS slightly better in an overall way. So ON AVERAGE the chances are good that more rifles will shoot better with the SK than with CCI SV. But the individual rifles still have a say in the matter.

It is good ammo in my gun and is comparable to my standard eley club. $69 a brick isn't a steal, but it is a level above normal plinking ammo. CCI sv is also a level above but I have little experience with it personally. Which is better would come down to what lot you got and the individual rifle. The only way to know if it is worth it is to try it. See if you can get a box before you buy a brick, or just buy a brick and sell 9 boxes if it doesn't meet expectations.

SK Standard is damn good in my NS522 and my Schultz Larsen (better than CCI SV). YMMV

Further SK Rifle match is the best i have tried in both of the above. Better then the actual Lupua (Center X). For my other Rimfires (10-22, Henry lever, AR-22) there is no difference at all and i usually run CCI SV (or MiniMag or Auto-Match).

In reality the Henry eats anything i have ever tried (LR or Short) and is the least finicky and possibly most fun rifle i own </shamelessHenryPlug>.

Interesting, my BV prefers CCI over the sk, however I did notice that the CCI would throw 1 or 2 flyers per sleeve whereas the sk did not, what my BV really loves is RWS club and CCI green tag, but at $100 per brick it only gets those on the right day
