.... I've seen a few high-end guns for sale with skateboard grip tape covering the grips on the gun. I think it looks like sh!t. But, then, I don't compete. Does it really improve grip for the purposes of competition?

It does work really well. I've had to take my hands out of water to grab the gun - no issues. I've had oil on my hands (thanks to a last minute tune up of someone else's gun) and the tape ignores it, and even once and a while - sweat - tape just keeps on gripping.

The trick is in doing it right, breaking the back of the tape and heating it to mould it properly to the gun. The first downside is the stuff does wear out and need replacing occasionally. The second downside - you mentioned - it looks like crap to a lot of us. (me included)

i use it on my guns...i dont like gripping a slippery eel!

I tried the tape
but didnt like it, always seem to start to
roll or come off at the worst possible time.(murphy)
not as bad as the hogue condom but dont care for it.
I just started to stiple my frames and gripps.Works much better
and can customize the designe .Ive done it with my 1911, Glock 23
a sig( a fellow paid me a stupid price specifically becouse of the stippling.)
I 'll be doing my XD40 next.
trying to visualize what a revolver wold look like.
regards

I thought I would never put grip tape on a gun. Didn't want to be 'that guy'. The Kimber CDP's didn't come in so I had to settle for a Compact Stainless. No factory checkering. Figured I might as well try the tape as I had some kicking around. Wow. A lot 'grippier' than checkering. Dosen't look as ###y as checkering but dosen't look to bad and the efectiveness far out weighs the looks. + a hell of a lot cheaper than having checkering done ;)

I have it on two guns. It can look like crap if you don't take your time to do it.
I use the tape thats used for stair cases. works great, doesn't look that bad.

Well, I don't know if this matters but people who depend on their guns for their livelyhood use it and they probably don't care if it looks like sh*t. Nor do the enemy dead, last I heard.

I have skateboard tape on a few of my autos. I buy iy from a place called "Itchy Foot Moe's", here in Tucson. I used to get some strange looks from the clerks when they saw a gray haired old man buying the tape. The looks got even stranger when I explained what I needed it for. The first time I bought it, I asked the clerk if I could compare the various shades to the gun and showed my ID. That calmed him down.

Since it comes in different colors and shades, I try to match it to the color of the frame.

Here's a photo of a Sig 220 with it:

PS: I spelled color the Yankee way.

When you shoot, you care less and less about looks, and more and more about performance. And you use whatever it takes. And skateboard tape does have a use.

The frame/grip should be preped properly, ie. cleaned/degreased, and the tape applied properly, ie. cut, heated and formed to fit.

It won't last forever, but it's simple, cheap and it works. Just buy another .06c piece of tape and apply it to your $3,000 heater.

Also works for revolvers, where checkering can't be applied.

just use a hair dryer or heat gun, get it warm enough so it flexes easily.

skateboard tape is not too flexable cold...... also a good idea to warm bith the gun and the tape so that they bond well.... let cool completly before handling.

I guess if I was a skater/mall ninja I might give it a whirl. But in my world you will never see grip tape on any of my pistols or revolvers. I buy guns and or aftermarket grips that fit my hand properly and have never seen the need.

And yes I have tried it on other peoples pistols and didnt like it. But hey, I wasnt shooting a pistol while trying to do a nose wheelie while mall security was chasing me, so what the Hell do I know :D

I own a 1911A1 that was grip-taped when I got it. The original owner taped the grip panels and folded the tape around to the backside of the panels. When I removed the grip panels (I don't like tape) I found that the frame ended up with an ugly rash from the repeated jarring of the abrasive against the frame during firing.

If you're going to use grip tape, make sure the abrasive side faces out...

I found the best tape was the type they use on step ladder's it has an aluminum back instead of plastic. Once it is put on it dozent move around as much as the plastic .

This weekend I just completed my black badge course and my instructor Pat Warner had me put grip tape on the Beretta 92fs 9mm I was using. It had a sandpaper (pretty much what it is right) effect on my right han after drawing alot. I did improve grip but I found it to be a pain and distracting. my cents.

My buddy just applied grip tape to his prize about four hours ago. I picked up some ladder grip tape at princess auto, a few snips and viola. Its got the same texture as emory cloth so if he needs to sand anything...
