A friend just gave me one, model 605, pretty as the day is long. Nice etching, nice wood, what do I have??

First of all, you have a great friend !

You have a what many(myself included) consider to be a good quality shotgun of the likes of the "B" guns but does not command the same money as far as resale goes in equivilant as possible grades.

The 605 If I remember correctly was after the Ithaca and Mitsu importing was over and done with and so is marked as an SKB. It has choke tubed barrels ?
I had an Ithaca model 600 12 ga. which was the previous generation and still have one in 20 ga. the next gen was the 685.

Grades of O/U started at the 500(505, 585), 600(605, 685), 700, 800 etc etc

500's were all blued receivers, the 505 and later 500 series grayed receivers
600's early production blued receiver, later 600's and later series were grayed with more ingraving and so on, 800 series came with sideplates.

All use a low profile receiver with trunnions and Greener crossbolt for lockup, barrels crome lined and a black crome finish instead of a traditional bluing.

I can't put this thing down, I never thought I would be interested in an O/U.
I just started a thread to try to understand how to choose the firing order of the barrels. The only thing I can see is the switch in the trigger where a safety would normally sit.
And thanks for the input guys, he is indeed a good friend, a Beretta 1200F was in the package too, both are mint.

Get some snap caps and point your 605 in a safe direction and pull the trigger one time. Open the action and see which barrel ejects. That will tell you the button position in relation to barrel.

A 1200F as well? He must be a really special friend:D

I am a bit embarrassed to say that I had no idea the gun would only eject the spent shell instead of both. Using this idea then wouldn't a pair of spent shells work the same, or just go get some snap caps?

Yes the spent shells would work the same. Actually dry firing would also work. Just watch what ejector pops. I would have suggest that, but some of these threads are monitored by the dry firing police.

I went with the empty casing, figured it out. I tried the dry fire thing first but I was watching for pins, again not realizing it would only eject the spent casing.
Last mystery is how the gun knows that it has been fired opposed to dry fired, it only "clicks" once when a live round isn't being used.

Your gun probably has an inertia block, which requires recoil to allow the second pin to fire. If you want to demo this, dry fire it and then bump the butt down firm on a carpet to simulate recoil and then pull the trigger again.
Your gun really doesn't know anything but has a device installed to prevent doubling.

Excellent, thank you.
Now I just need to join the trap guys at my club and warm this gun up a little.
I appreciate the help!
