Ok we are in first stages, of bring skeet to our club.
I have lots of drawings on the skeet course. I was wondering what sizes you made your skeet houses? It seems that aslong as the height is right you can make them what ever you like. Is 8ft square too big? It would be nice to have some target storage there.. Any input would be great. Also what do they require for a fence back from the houses?

I'll take some rough measurements for you when I'm out at the range today.

In both the high and low house areas where the trap actually sits, there is enough room behind and to one side of the machine to stack 2 rows of boxes as high as is practical.

Make sure you build them high enough inside to comfortably stand up!

We also use the ground floor of the high house for bird storage on pallets.

I'll take some pics too.

Here you go Kenny.

We have 2 Skeet fields (actually combination Skeet and Trap; the trap bunker sits just ahead of the #8 Skeet station). Skeet 1 has the high house with storage underneath, and a combo house (attached to our Trap/Skeet shack) for Skeet 1 low and Skeet 2 high. Skeet 2 low is a stand alone house as shown.

Your heights of course are determined by the height you need the trap to sit at, your grades, etc.

The dimensions of all of our Skeet houses are 8' X 8' outside - outside. I suspect these dimensions were chosen primarily for efficiency sheeting the exteriors; they were built well before my time here.

Here are some pics.

thanks great pictures ,, I love the long low house used for storage, this helps alot

You're welcome. The 'trap shack' is great; we do our admin for the day's shooting in there, lots of storage room, etc.

Behind that you can see the end of the sea can where we keep the bulk of our cases of birds.

No such thing as too big.

Target storage is a very good thing. If you can fit full pallets of targets, it could make life easier for you. If you can find a way to move full pallets into your houses even better. The coolest one I've heard of allowed for full pallets of targets to be forklifted into the high house.

If you are putting a single stack trap in, and eventually upgrade to a turret trap, you'll need more room. make sure you have lots of room between the target opening and the far wall (past the target chute)

If rather than external stairs going up to the high house, an inclined ladder inside the house is a good choice (eaiser to climb than one which is straight up).

Very good point. Also you want to be able to slide a good stack of birds into the top of the machine. Some Winchester (single stack) machines go up reasonably high. Loading half a box stack of targets at a time because there isn't room above the target guides, is a pain. (I prefer loading 2 box stacks of targets at a time)

Kenny:

Before you get too far along, and not to understate the obvious ... CFO's approval of
your proposed layout ???

A lot of Clubs have been "jumping through the ropes" with the CFO in respect
of shot fall distance ... i.e., does the shot fall from your proposed range stay within
their safety guidelines (and - totally stay within your property boundary)

If you haven't ascertained this as a certainty with them ... it really should be the first thing you do (if you haven't already & hopefully you have ! ) is to invlove them early in the process before a lot of work & money goes to ground.

The Otter Valley Range is already set-up with 3 or 4 trap fields, I have sent kenny a pm to find out whether they are adding the Skeet to the trap fields or making different fields. But the place is a fully operational Rifle,Handgun, and shotgun range.

skeet

we had Skeet few years back ,they took it out and houses are gone. So it will go in the same spot. We have already had it aproved, We have added a couple of cowboy action shoot buildings since then that will have be be closed in .. other than that it will just take alot of work and a wheel barrel full of money

I sure hope your approval is "current" ie: post 2005ish under the "new" regime of the Federal Guidelines. Seems like everytime I turn around there is another skeet range being closed by the CFO... ranges that had prior approval too.

Good luck!
