Skeet lesson SW Ontario?

I'm looking for any leads on getting some skeet lessons.

I live in London On and shoot on Sundays. I been lucky enough to watch Paul's and Todd's skeet videos which have tought me the fundimentals. I'm new to skeet and have been shooting for approximately four mounths. I enjoy getting out and shooting rounds and believe I need to shoot hundreds more to improve. So I'm not complaining about the skill level I'm at now. However I feel I would greatly benefit from lesson from a qualified coach.

So any tips or leads on who offers lessons or comes near town to offer lesson in the near future would be greatly appreciated.
 
I read that Obama shoots skeet, give him a call - he'll be looking for work in 4 years and he'll be back in Illinois closer to your location :cool: :dancingbanana:

Sorry, I just could not resist when I read your thread title next to threads about last week's picture.

Anyway, an attempt at advise: find a certified instructor who is using a certified package of material. Down here, certified instructors are listed on NRA site, and customers can search by zip code. I just checked NFA site, do not see similar. Hopefully somebody will chime in with a link. Failing that, ask staff and check the bulletin boards at your local range or local shops that cater to trap and skeet.

Have you tryed calling the ranges in our area? Crumlin may offer classes. The guys over at Gobals would be good to talk to as well, I am sure they would know. Good luck in your search.
 
If you are lucky enough to have reg hooper giving you advice, though I don't know what he is like as a teacher. He is one of Canada's best American skeet shooters in my opinion.

You'd be hard pressed to get better instruction.

That said the only NSSA certified instructor in Ontario I believe is Rick Lawry. But I think you'd have a tough time to get him to come out and coach you.

Your best bet is to get in touch with Frank Stewart and go to kirkfield for a clinic with Bender if he's coming this summer.

I went to a bender clinic at franks it was great!
 
L.P. will be in Waterford Aug 8-11. Don Walton is the contact for that one.
He will also be in Ottawa Aug 13-15. Andy Spooner is the contact there.

I'd strongly recommend taking it, and I would guess Reg would probably approve as well.

I have been lucky to shoot on the same squad as Reg and do take his tips an points seriously plus the tips from other members too. Which is a good thing, making me want to improve my game and I feel an "all weekend" clinic would improve my game quicker then the sunday rounds on the skeet field.

Quality instruction is great, but as Brad above is fond of saying, the first 100,000 are the hardest. There is a lot of truth to that.

Most improvement comes from trigger time. You can apply all the fundamentals and knowledge and lessons you want to your shooting, but if you don't actually get
out there and do it, pretty hard to improve.

That said you want to try your best to not reinforce bad habits. If you have watched the bender video a few times and L.P.'s apply those lessons everytime, you are a lot farther ahead then a lot of skeet shooters out there.

As you may have heard this before, pick one person for advice and listen to them consistently, if Reg is willing to watch you and help you out, listen to only him. Otherwise you end up with all kinds of nonsense that you will find it difficult to discern what is correct and what isn't.

It is also nice to shoot with someone better than yourself, and who is competitive, I wish I had that at my home club, I would be much more motivated to get out
shooting if I had someone to shoot with, who could actually take is seriously and not so much as a retirement pastime. Hard to get consistent practice when it's all jokes and story telling. It is still fun though :)

Best of luck, head down, eye's off the barrel and on that target all the time, if you can manage that much you're at least half way there. :D
 
Thanks gwagen for taking the time to post your reply. Which is good bit of advice. I'm looking into Paul's clinic this August in Waterford. One more piece of advice a gentlemen said to me this past shoot is regarding lead. "If your going to miss then its better to miss ahead of the target then behind". For me that really stuck in my head.

I'm still enjoying the challenge of skeet and am a believer of "trigger time". I'm working on lead and my nemesis the follow through!
