Hi all,

Just wondering how much more difficult it is to shoot 5 stand, S/C, and/or skeet with a full choked gun as opposed to a Skeet, IC, or Modified choke?

Reason I ask is that I just picked up a used Ithaca XL-900 on the weekend and I'm hoping to use it for a clay shooting gun. It was pretty darn cheap for an old school, Japanese, gas operated semi. Seeing as it has a 2 3/4" chamber and a Full choked barrel it should be just fine for trap. Question is, am I going to be setting myself up for frustration trying to use it for the other "games"?

Thoughts??

Depends on the distance and presentation of the targets I would think.

I know the full choke would be an advantage on some five stand set ups I have shot.

Don't worry so much about the choke - you just have to be "on em'". As for frustration - aren't we all frustrated with the shotgun sports at times :)

Go out and enjoy your shotgun!

In my O/U I shot a modified / light full combo when I started. I have now moved to improved cylinder / modified and have not noticed a huge difference (although I am not an amazing shooter to begin with).

I would say go for it. On really close presentations you might have a hard time, but on longer presentations you will have the edge.

Its not impossible you just need to be on the bird better as the shot string will be more concentrated.I know a guy at my club who practices skeet with his full/imp mod o/u trap gun.I have seen him shoot 24 on several occaciations.

With what I have seen you will be able to powder the targets easier when you do hit them. My friend has a full choke only wing master that we used for trap. Pretty much every target he got ahold of was powdered. Everyone else shooting any other choke would break them but not a definitively. But really if you've got the gun already use it, enjoy it, and if you don't sell it and try something else. We can give you all the advise in the world but only you know what works for you.

I have been wondering when I could use these!!!
Maxus Mod. about 16 yds.

Maxus IC about 16 yds.

Citori MOD about 35 yds

I didn't have any full choke pics but these give some Idea that up close FULL would be less forgiving.

Those are great! Makes it much more visual and easy to understand. Thanks for that! :)

I've done a bit of research on chokes and it seems there is some variance between brands/manufacturers.

I think I'm going actually measure mine. I assume and digital caliper just inside the muzzle will do??

Not really. See the constriction is a measure of reduction below barrel bore diameter, and bores vary manufacturer to manufacturer. You need to measure bore at choke, bore at full bbl diameter and subtract to truly understand what the constriction is.

This distinction is more important with older fixed choke guns (who knows what's been done to it over the years).

A bore mic is the only way I know to accurately determine constriction. If you belong to a trap/sporting clays/skeet club a fellow member probably has one. I'd ask around.

I use a f/m 28" barreled sxs for skeet 5stand and sporting. Choke for smoke! The gun fits and I shoot it well and often run 25s in skeet. I average 23.5 though. For a fun experiment I've used a 4x full custom choke for skeet. Best I've done is 20 with it. If you're on the target at reasonable distance any choke will do. The break may not be great but chips count. When I shot cylinder bore I use 7.5s cuz they hit harder in the event less bbs hit the target. Otherwise I use #8 or #8.5s

Full or Mod, Feels the same. if i miss i miss, if i hit, goes 1000 pieces.
same goes to shot shells. 8oz, 7 1/2 or whatever other people use. I do shoot 2 time a week at least on 5 stand, cont, hcp.
Only thing choke matters is on hcp 22+ yards i find but even mod choke will do just fine at 22 yards if you shoot fast enough.
However, in Skeet, i do change my chokes quite often but full choke seems to get me same scores in 5 stand then any other ones
just grab whats there and shoot, have fun!

As everyone has already stated, yes, you have to be ON ! If your timing is off, you lose most of your advantage you would have had with a true skeet choked barrel. It just makes it harder on you and gives you less freedom to make mistakes. Hell, any choke can be used, but for most people, the difference in chokes is night and day. Some people arn't effected as much. But when somebody is shooting 24's and you need a 25 are you willing to put the odds against you or in your favor ? Only time on the range will tell you what your situation will be. Give it a shot, shoot 4 rounds and see what happens.

I shot 72/75 is 5 stand today with a full choke. All 3 I missed I'm sure I would have missed with any choke. Practice and a gun that fits is more important than choke
