One of our dogging runs, has a spot where the only way up the ridge is a narrow goat path. It's about 50 feet down on one side, and fifty feet up on the other. The path itself varies from a few inches to a few feet wide, as it slowly climbs the cliff face. It's usually covered with deer tracks.
Anyway,
Mike was doing the push that day, and the dogs were off on a chase, gone the wrong way, he waited twenty minutes for their return, but they didn't show, so he decided he'd move to the cliff top.
Although i wasn't with him, I can hear Mike grumbling even now (He hates that cliff) as he was only fifty yards or so from the top, he hears a noise. He looks around, but he can't see anything but down anyway, so quietly pushes on. Crash, a huge buck apears in the air, over head. Lands on the trail behind him, bounds once, and disapears over the side into the brush below. I'm sure Mike wanted to see how the hell the deer managed to stay in one piece jumping over the side, but his ears told him that the chase was on, as my returning hounds, picked him up, and like the first chase, went the wrong way :? .
Deer only run into the wind right? HA HA HA!
Our deer run wichever F'n way they feel like running that day.
Mike finnished the run, the dogs rejoined him, and we added another story to the many F'd up chases we've had over the years.
We think the deer was shot on that run, from the direction of the shots, it was the camp up the road. Dogs stopped after the shots.
