I did post this earlier in the wrong forum...sorry

The wife and I are looking into our first shotgun
we will be using it mostly for Skeet, Trap, Sport and maybe Turkey

We can spend up to 1,400.00 at the most but a $1000 would be MUCH better

What type of action and shotgun would you recommend

Appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks
B

Are you and your wife the same size? One of the key's to proficiency in clay games is that the gun fit you perfectly. It's not unheard of to pull the trigger 100-150 times in the course of an afternoon. If the gun doesn't fit one of you properly, you'll really take some abuse.

Just a suggestion, consider two gently used firearms, one for her one for you.

Start hanging out at local gun clubs. In many cases, you'll find people are more than willing to let you both try whatever they're shooting. It's a great way to get to know a gun, and some people. You'll find that a lot of guns are for sale that will never make it to these forums, and ESPECIALLY not a store. Most of them are exchanged between members at clubs, because people get a chance to try before you buy.

You may find it difficult to get a good Over/Under for that price point. You CAN get good semi's, and ladies tend to like them because they're a little softer shooting. Consider Beretta AL391 (there's a trap model up in the EE now) and Remington 1100 (make sure you check it out first).

Thanks for the good info Koko83, We will be joining the Oshawa skeet and gun club in Port Perry over the next week or so.

I believe we should get a semi auto

I am 6' the wife is 5'8" and much slimmer :-(

gun choice.

I shoot at the Oshawa Club. Email me if you are heading out and we might be able to set-up a bunch of different guns for you to try before you buy anything.

I don't know how your club works, but at our club, most members will let you shoot a round of trap or skeet with their gun, to let you try the various makes and models of guns. There is no better way to know how you like a gun, than actually shooting it.

I am fairly new to trap as well.

I bought a Bronwing Maxus Sporting Carbon Fibre from Prophet River.

Delivered to BC it was 1326 all in!

I love it.

The guys at the club I shoot at were great too. They let me try their guns prior to my purchase.

So why did you buy the "Bronwing"?
Never mind they are great guns. Enjoy!

Why did I buy the Browning.

For once this will be a simple answer.

It fit.

I tried it at a local dealer and everything about it felt natural. I had received much feedback on line and from the guys at the club and all the things to look for, this shotgun had.

I have been extremely happy with my purchase.

I had also tried the fit of the Remington 1100, but it just didn't feel right.

Fit and feel bought me a great shotgun from a great dealer (Prophet River).

Fit is everything. sadly, sometimes what fits you the best, is not the ###iest or the classiest. like my 870 Express.

Funny thing is I was thinking of an 870 pump as a possible buy, especially when you want to use your gun in so many different activities as described here. I used mine for ducks and pheasants for many years. Proven action, almost indestructible, never a failure in all kinds of conditions... don't see much wrong with them myself. One of my friends shot trap with one without being seriously handicapped, though the gun was a trap model, and one of the best rounds I have seen shot in 5 stand was done with an 870 pump, probably unusual I know, but it can be done. The main disadvantages of the gun, as I see it, are having a single barrel and maybe using a pump for doubles, which would take some practice, but you sure could hunt turkeys with the gun and get by in everything else.

I started with an 870. GREAT guns, but mine was a field model. Beat me up pretty bad. Another consideration would be a winchester model 12. The best shooter at my club uses a trap model, and has for many years. It shoots BEAUTIFULLY.

Hey, rubicon, you could always suggest that your wife gain a few pounds for the sake of your shotgun purchase. Then you'd only have to get one! Thoughts?
