Hello all. I Have a browning a-5 magnum twelve. I would like to try and shoot skeet with it. Unfortunately the light skeet loads wont let it cycle in the next shell.
Is there a possibility of getting a lighter spring for it, or some other fix?
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Cdog.

there is a setup with the spring and washer that will allow a light load

put the flat washer on the bottom, then the spring, then the brass friction ring

Hello all. I Have a browning a-5 magnum twelve. Cdog.

The keyword here is MAGNUM. The lightest load it is designed for is the 2-3/4 inch High Velocity game load. You can download the manual from the Browning website.

I've never heard of the existence of a lighter spring to do what you're describing.

Trade it for a light!

I have a light twelve that ive smashed a billion skeet with :D:D:D
Id try changing the bushing/washer config. anyway. Other then that your pretty much screwded! If you load you own trap loads you can beef them up with some good data and an adjustable charge bar! or some good knowlegde and a drill:)

Thanks for the heads up, I will try the new configuration. I have only recently decided to give skeet a try, always been a centerfire guy. My grandfather recently stopped by and dropped all of his firearms off, so I have no excuse to give it a go!!! My other question is that it had 2 barrels, one i would guess is a short slug barrel, the other is longer and has a screw in choke. So my question is would this choke be steel safe? The gun is like new but at least 20 years old if that helps. Perhaps I should just buy a new choke?
Many thanks for all the help,
Cdog.

I just took the 24" barrel off the gun. There are 2 brass friction rings and 3 washers!? The 30" barrel with choke also has "invector special steel" written on it if this helps.
Thanks again,
Cdog.

I would think the shorter barrel might help with cycling the tap loads as it has less moving mass maybe? not as much steel for the light sheels to move back not sure if you know or not but Auto 5's are not gas they are recoil operated good luck!

I use one like that for skeet and Sp/Clays - take out the rings, insert the spring and then the steel ring, tapered side up, then the forend. I shoot mine that way with target loads - works every time.

oldstarfire is right. take out the rings for clay loads, add one ring back for 2 3/4 inch heavy loads and add both rings for mags.numrich GPC has two different recoil springs at two different prices. one for auto 5 mag and one for light twelve. other than the price i don't see any difference. the rings in stiffen the recoil spring, the rings out soften it.
