I attended my first "Skills and Drills" last Saturday. It was an excellent training session and a great way to spend a -25 degree day.
It started out with .22 caliber rifle at 20 yards on challenging bulls eye targets. I borrowed a rifle and others had iron sighted and optic rifles. Ten shots each in three positions, prone, kneeling and standing. Shooting a .22 rifle is a fundamental skill that one should always continue to refine. Okay, it's just a lot of fun too. 30 rounds required.
The next part was pistol. Pistols were drawn from holster or start at low ready. IDPA targets were used. Targets were engaged at varying distances, around "barricades", shooting while moving, through ports etc. This part really enhanced IDPA skills. IDPA rules and scoring were followed. I really liked the shooting-port stage. There were eight ports with eight targets some targets overlapping. This really tested memory, accuracy and reload skills. One port one target...Challenging and fun.
At the end there was a tic-tac-toe game at 10 yards. Way harder than you'd expect! It was fun shooting head-to-head.
109 rounds of pistol required.
Robert the organizer talked about how he tested out the particular drills we were attempting. I am sure there will be new and unique drills in the future...
Lunch was included.
The range was small with four lanes but was incredibly quiet, extremely clean and well lit. I was told it was built during World War II so that added to the atmosphere of this nice little range.
Overall I felt it was well run, drills were conducted at a good pace and the training improved fundamental shooting skills.
I would highly recommend attending this shoot. Did I mention it was fun?
