sks 56 , 7.62x 39 (chinese)

The dust cover is kind of light for holding a scope. At the gun show I bought a solid steel replacement for the dustcover that has a rail built into it. The two feet sticking out forward were delibertly made a little too long. A few swipes of a file makes it a perfect tight fit. The scope sits a little higher than I like, but it works well.

I have two of these. One has a red dot sight, one a 4 x scope. I have done only a limited sight in. So far, they seem to work. I expect to shoot them at 300 yards next weekend, and the Swiss Rifle Club, so will know for sure after that if they are solid enough.

You could get a Scout mount from Marstar & put a red dot or long eye relief one.
You could also get a Russian POSP 4x scope that would bolt on the side.

Those are the only 2 I would recommend.

yeah most ppl say the receiver cover mount is a hit and miss... I have 2 and both are "misses", for my rifles anyways

get a drilled tapped type (choate has one) or the scout mount

i had the same one along time ago in the states. Could not get it to hold zero if my life depended on it, and i did not like the idea of the bolts on the side scratching the receiver.

Meant to? I'm sure they all would if they were meant to.

The side rail is pretty much a standard Russian/Soviet design signature.

Also look at the design of the SKS, the receiver cover rattles back and forth under use, and they all do this regardless of who made the carbine.

Unlike the AK the SKS bolt partially travels on rails/grooves inside the receiver cover...which is held in place by one simple very loose attachment point at the rear with little holding it in place in the forward position...With tolerances so great many times one can see light through the side of them.

Also note that in spite of the AK having a more independent receiver cover, they are also built for use with side rails.

Receiver cover mounts are an ill thought out marketing gimmick that would have never been approved for mil spec.
