30 something years ago, when I was working as a military pyrotechnics contractor in the Philippines, army logistics officers involved with M-16 batch acceptance tests told me that they would fire a 1000 rd full auto string, no break except to change magazines. At certain intervals, they would immerse the rifle in water, sand, mud. Can't remember what the % acceptable FTE or FTE rate was, but it was almost nil.

My partner and I were trying to convince the officers that perhaps they should let some civilians with little AR experience shoot the test, to simulate less experienced soldiers shooting in a firefight. They did not bite.

M-16A1s were tough and reliable.
