Now that i have my SKS, what special tools or accessories should I be looking at to get. I was looking at the Tapco site I saw mentioned on another thread and saw special sight tools, and gas port cleaning thingys etc. For me, getting small parts the USA is not a problem, and I am assuming its cheaper to do so.

Those things are good to have but what you really need is a case or so of ammo. A real cleaning rod and brush make life alot easyer if you don't already have one.

Ahhh great thanks ! I already have the cleaning rods from my 308 hunting rifle, and C9er been nice enough to fix me up with some ammo till I collect enough beer bottles to cash in and buy a case of ammo:D My sks tool kit includes a "plastic" bore brush, is that because its better to use that in a chromed bore instead of a regular bronze brush, or because its just cheaper for them to send a plastic one ??

Ammo and more ammo.

Other then that, buy or make some glogg - I find that SKS cleaning in winter goes much better when you have a good warm drink. :)

The stock SKS kit works better IMHO then anything you are going to spend money on. Learn how it goes together, and play with it...Ivan put allot of thought into this little device.

If you do use a bore snake follow some simple rules:
Always pull straight, to avoid damaging rifle crown.
Keep the bore snake clean.
Don't wrap patches around the bore snake...it could get stuck.

kit?? you mean the tool kit I am guessing, unfortuately, either the thread on my rod, or the threads on the brush is messed up, so it hardly threads together. I am gonna have to find someone with some dies to re-thread it for me. So does that mean that plastic brush is better than a bronze one????

I don't even use the OEM cleaning kit that came with the rifle. The plastic brush that comes with the kit was the first thing to go in the garbage!! Plastic is nowhere near as good as phosphor bronze when it comes to bore brushes. Invest in a good Otis cleaning kit, or a boresnake. A cheap universal cleaning rod and a few bore brushes (a 12-gauge one and a 22-cal one) from Cambodian Tire are handy for cleaning the gas tube, and the gas port is easily cleaned with a dental pick (can be gotten free from the dentist, as long as you promise not to use it on yer teeth!).

As for tools & accessories, you may want to invest in a front sight tool. You'll probably only use it twice; once if your SKS front sight needs adjusting, and once if you want to replace the front sight with a fibre-optic sight. Still, a must-have tool if you ask me :D

I don't think the brush is plastic. Instead it is made of pig's hair which has traditionally been adopted by Chinese, especially for SKS as it was the main battle rifle.

I'm going to get some pics together of mine in action soon. :)

Cleaning rod through side of handle in the large hole.

The little pick like tool threads through a small hole in the side of the handle and stabilizes the cleaning rod in the handle, and fits across the palm of your hand.

Slide the tool kit cap as a lock-on muzzle protector.
Then the brush, and later the jag with a clean patch wrapped around it.

First time I put it together I thought...Brilliant! :dancingbanana:

I'm thinking of buying an extra just for my Enfield, as they are the same bore size. .311", I'd need to use a longer rod though.

BTW a tool kit for the AK also goes a further step by having a small front sight tool to adjust the height of the sight post, and a small flat head screwdriver etc.

so what I gather from this thread

1) the chicom bore brush is made from pig hair

2) you can mess up your bore by scrubbing it with a hoppes bronze brush?

3) I need to get myself a SKS cleaning kit ;)

Sorry if I was confusing...It would prob' take allot to screw up the chrome bore with your bronze brush, and some SKS kits of other nations seemed to have a similar type of them.

My point was IMHO the modern bronze brush isn't necessary while the stock brush does the same job.

Also there are some companies out there that have an adapter for the SKS cleaning rod so it can use modern cleaning brushes/jags/etc.

Have you looked in the stock? I had no idea there was anything in there when I bought mine (brand new still in cosmoline back in 1990 from a gun store in Connecticut). It had a really stiff spring on it and I could never get it to do anything as I didn't want to break anything. Finally found out I couldn't hurt it, pushed like mad and out popped a cleaning kit, smashing my thumb in the process. Very exciting. Just like Christmas.

Where did you buy yours from?
I bet the dealer has it, and is selling them separate...which IMHO is a pretty greasy sales tactic.

BTW SKSman, and Marstar have them for sale, as do many others.
