Hey Gun Nutz!
I want to tweak my SKS, and would like your advice.
There are a few practical accessories I'd like, and was wondering where I could get these in Canada..a sling and a 2 inch recoil pad (I really need the recoil pad, as I am 6'4'' and have huge monkey arms and need the extra length)
Also, putting practicallity aside for a moment...I was thinking of adding a muzzle break and a high capacity detachable mag (30 rnds?). Where can a high cap mag be purchased in Canada for a standard SKS.
And, besides making the gun look bad a$$, do muzzle breaks actually serve a practical purchase? (Are they worth buying?) Same question goes for recoil buffers--are they necessary? Thanks a bunch!

Okay... first off... aftermarket detachable mags are crap. If you absolutely have to have one then at least hang onto the original.

Why not just buy an SKS-D in the first place?

i would leave that thing original if i were you, as canuck i am said, the duckbills are no good. (get a D model then). I would for sure get yourself a recoil buffer pad, just becuse of the extra length it gives, i am 6'4 as well and i hated shooting my sks-d b4 i had that thing, the chinese stocks are waaay too short. everything else i would leave as is...

I just ordered a couple of recoil pads but I don't think they are 2". They make a big difference in pull length even with 1". Plus the pads on the Lever style new SKSs don't have the hole for the kit.

The mag thing is another question. The mags for non Ds' is an aftermarket duckbill type that isn't really designed for the rifle. I don't think these are readily removeable like the AK mag in the D model, which it is set up for. The duckbill mags are around but they cost about half as much as the rifle, and this is standard. The AK mags are expensive too.

I bought a couple of cheapo rifles and put some stuff on one of them.
Cheese grater handguard
Receiver cover mount & scope(I'd go with the MOJO for red dot)
Bayo lug mounted Bipod
Wolfes perfomance pak spring set
Bayonets
Extra rec.cover pin & latch
The other rifle I put the Tech TS200 rear aperture sight. All mods can be undone to original state.
I'd like to still get a steel extended mag release, the mojo set up as nothing else really holds on target and a proper recoil buffer. I use a neoprene washer used for plumbing in 3/4"x1/8" (5/8"x1/8" prob. better) and fit it behind the recoil spring. I'm trying this on the scoped rifle, read about it on another forum so we'll see. The flash hiders look cool but they don't stay on. Iwouldn't do something that you can't reverse

Thanks guys. The high capacity mag I really just wanted for show & intend to keep the original mag for hunting & target shooting. I'm going to keep the gun in mostly it's original condition--I just wanted to refinish the ugly orange stock, and get the 2'' butt pad for the extra length.

Some people have a lot of money for guns and they will look down on you if you bubba your SKS. Don't worry about what they think.

There are all kinds of neat things you could do to an SKS. I'll post a few SKS related links for you here and maybe you can get some inspiration. Browse and find what you want. It's your gun and you should mod it in any way that gets you hard.
