SKS and Milsurp Rifle Accuracy

Ganderite, thanks for the informative test and posts!! I know it took a lot of work to do that.

I'm wondering if you can test those rifles you used with decent commercial ammo and compare that to the surplus stuff? We know that surplus ammo has, shall we say, a less-than-stellar reputation for accuracy, as it's the number of rounds made that count, not how correctly they're put together......

Second, what size what that square needle file you used? I'd love to open up the square notches on my 91/30, SVT, and M44 (maybe even my SKS :d) for a better sight picture. Might even try that on my RC K98.

Ganderite, awsome posts, very interesting. I've yet to see any surplus 7.62x39 shoot better then 4-6" at 100 and i've seen lots of it do much worse. On the other hand, i have a friend who handloads for his sks with good bullets in brass cases, and shoots the 300 yrd gong (14" dia) with open sights and is upset if he doesn't ring it 5 out of 5, and regularly pulls 2-3" at 100. Mind you he spent two months working up a load it likes.....but its fun to watch him outshoot guys at the range with they're scoped deer rifles with his sks...giggle....

In the groups just posted above, you see Russian milsurp, Romanian milsurp and commercial Dominion non-corrosive. The commercial shot better. In the test last year I shot some federal, and it looked very good.

I have a set of needle files. best $10 I ever spent on ebay. One of them is square. I would guess a little less than a tenth of an inch. maybe a 1/16th. It is tapered at the tip so I can get it into a small U notch and work it wider, deeper and square. To my eye, this is a big improvement.

The fact that you got a tighter group with the pole m44 indicates to me that your 91/30 clone may have a bore on the looser side of things. One of the main differences I have seen between infantry rifles and snipers is much tighter dimensions on the sniper. Have you slugged the bore?

Yes. I was very pleased to see how well the M44 shot with milsup. It also means that this lot of ammo is pretty good. I have 3 cases of it, so that is nice to know.

The clone is built on a regular infantry rifle, so it is luck of the draw as to how well it shoots. I have not slugged it, but I do know that when I shoot .311 or .312 bullets in it, it does better. Almost all the shooting I do with it is with handloads, and I am satisfied with the results.
