SKS Bakelite Handguard

Found a "Red'ish" SKS Bakelite material hand guard today. No markings what so ever.

Anyone know anything about these?

They were original equipment for a couple of years on the Chinese 56 in the early 80's with fiberglass stocks.

Factory 26 did this on their sks carbines in 79 and 80 for the last two known years they made them. The bakelite hand guard was with a wood stock. It may be one of those, or the hand guard from a jungle stock which was a commercial offering and didn't come standard or matched to a carbine, was an "upgrade".

Not sure they were made in full Bakelite. The handguard on my 1980 type 56 /26\ is cool, the bubbled shellac is however, is not. Haha.

If its ribbed then it is from a late chinese /26\ if its smooth then its from a jungle stock set

i have one like it. I got the metal hand guard from HiCal. $20 if I remember correctly...

Funny you say that mine came the same way

I knew it was like that when I got it. The shellac is bubbled and almost has a stippled feel. I could strip it nd refinish but I've just left it. Wanted an original /26\ as the other two /26\ I have are chinese refurbs.
