Never thought about getting into an SKS but with all the crazy in the world its probably time.
So as I understand it there's a number of options as far as country of production?
Can you list in order with rough prices I should expect to pay the sought after to the common.
Also when purchasing what am I looking for as far as expected wear and tear and just red flag rifles.

Thanks

Russian ones seem to be around 250-400. don't pay more than 250. Russian ones are the ones that have a blade bayonet. For condition just give it a quick look over for rust or obvious damage. Some dings in the wood don't matter, its just cosmetic

The Chinese ones are around 210. Don't pay more than 250. I think cabelas still has a sale on for 200 right now. The Chinese ones have a spike on the end. It is actually better for stabbing things than the blade bayonet. The Russian ones are 1% better made in the fit and finish department so its irrelevant. Both guns will be 99% reliable.

There are other country manufactures but don't bother unless you are a collector. A Russian or Chinese will suit any shooting, prohibing or end of the world needs

Get a wood stocked one over the plastic stocks. Men spend countless hours over several years to make the SKS what it is, leave it alone, don't try to make it some thing its not, rifle is fine.

Look for one with a nice trigger. They range from 5-10lbs, Russian and Chinese. Izhevsk made ones are the best. Chinese are generally accurate. Wait for someone wanting to get rid of his on the EE, you can find very good ones for 250 to 300. Light refurbs are just fine you don't need an un issued. The 1950 transitions are pretty rare but early Russians don't have chrome lines barrels. Chinese sks are always chrome lined. So less danger of barrel rust if you forget to clean after shooting corrosive ammo.

Well another post said don't spend more than $250 . if by chance you come across a mint as issued one then you might have to pay above $250. the Russian sks rifles made from 1949 to 1951 ? have no chrome lining in the barrel . I wouldn't let that scare you off. just take it apart and flush it with boiling water. the Yugo sks rifles barrels aren't chrome lined and I have shot one and it was very accurate. the Chinese ones shoot good also . what the bottom line is you really can't go wrong with any of them if the price is right . as it sits now if you want one that hasn't been farted around with then grab one of the Yugo ones that are for sale on the EE. they are heavier than the Russian rifles and the Chinese but no one was in a rush to make them .

you will be paying around $700 for one . if by chance you can find one without the BBQ paint on it go for it . I have seen a Russian barrel that was chrome lined that looked like the moon - it was very pitted . in a gun store . good luck and happy shooting .
