I recently bought a Simonov SKS (1951) from a friend. Shoots like a dream and is in great condition except for the bayonet which is badly corroded. I ordered a "new" replacement for it however the screw that keeps the bayonet in is badly stripped and very stiff. Any ideas on how I could take it out?

You can buy a drillbit specially made for removing stripped screws and bolts, can't remember the name but its got to be at your nearest hardware store, just tell the guy what its for. Cheers.

It's not so much that the screw is stripped as I can move it back and forth with a power drill about 30 degrees. But it's very tight, I guess I should have worded the original post a little different. I've put some penetrating oil and crud cutter on it but it doesn't seem to help much? Do they turn the opposite way to tighten screws in russia? lol

Kevin, are you sure it's a screw and not a rivit? I've seen some (think they were SKS-D Norinco's if I remember correctly?) that had rivits, and the bayo was quick detachable.

Yeah, I turned it over and there is a rivet with two dimples on either side. Is it still possible to remove without a hacksaw?

If I remember right, the bayo is shaped like a fish hook around the rivit. So you unfold the bayo to about half way (making it 90 degrees square to the rifle barrel), and kind'a push the bayo in towards the barrel. It'll pop off the rivet without too much effort. Still, I'm just going by memory, here, sorry, and I may be wrong.

No, that's not how this one is put together. There is a screw on one side threaded into a bolt on the other side which is what the bayonet rotates on. (From what I can see at least) Thanks anyway.
