When we released the SKS Magwell Adapter (watch Part 1 HERE), one question kept coming up: what about the bolt modification? Many shooters weren’t sure how the tilting bolt interacts with detachable mags—or why that little cut at the back of the bolt makes such a difference.
Here’s the breakdown: the original SKS bolt has a lip designed for the old duckbill magazines. That lip prevents you from swapping mags on a closed bolt. By milling down that lip and cutting a small slot, you give the bolt room to tilt properly while still feeding smoothly. The result? You can now insert detachable mags without fighting the bolt, no hacks to your magazines required.
This small modification transforms the SKS from a surplus relic into a more modern, user-friendly rifle—especially if you’re running our Magwell Adapter. Done right, it’s clean, reliable, and keeps your rifle running just the way it should.
