Is it just me or have prices on here for SKS D's gone retardo'd? I remember less than a year ago whjen one could be had at SIR for somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 bucks(maybe 180?), and now, whenever I check the forums, there is someone trying to flog thiers for 300+! I guess its buyer beware, but wow, for the extra 50 or 75 bucks i think id rather have a VZ58...

what do you think?

I guess it's supply and demand issue. There is a rumor going around that Norinco will not manufacture them anymore.VZ58 is restricted and non restricted 858 will be supposedly issued with non chromed barrels.

SKS-D brand new at going for $300 at P-D (the only place I could find them). Non-Ds, if you can find them are still mid $150-ish though.

If you can find one in a D brand new on a shelf for $200-ish, I'd appreciate a link.

Keep in mind that before the last major shipments of SKS-Ds into Canada, prices had climbed up past $400.00 for a VG condition, used, gun. The market had been dry for a couple of years or longer, and that's what happens.

Have the D's improved?

I remember buying a Norinco SKS-D a long time ago... had really ugly mags (looked like a fixed clip at the end) and they were a pain to insert.
They were also very unreliable.

If they are commanding the kind of prices being suggested here I too would get a CZ-858; they seem like a good deal now.

Are you refering to the duckbill mags? They turn a regular SKS into one that has detachable mags. Junk at best.

The SKS D uses AK47 magazines.

As Armedsask said, the mags for the D are the same as AKs and are built like a tank. All the ones I've seen are quite heavy (I guess that's a relative term). The only drawback is that the straight 5rd mags, being that they are small are a bit of a pain to put in/take out, but the bigger mags are much easier IMHO. They "look" fine though, in my opinion.

As for being unreliable? I've heards SKS's called many things, but unreliable isn't one of them. All the ones I've fired in the past took all sorts of abuse without hesitation. I guess others may disagree though.

The AK-Mag version sounds nice... I had the duckbill one and it would always misfeed. I was lucky if I could get 2 off without a jam.

I'd like something chambered for a 7.62x39 though.

Yep... I'd like "something" chambered for 7.62x39; I've owned 3 SKS's before (All Norinco - 2 fixed mag)

I miss buying the next cheapest ammuntion after .22lr

ah... there is a few 7.62x39 guns out there. Some are non-restricted some are restricted. Mind you almost all the cool ones are prohib.

Now not to hijack but is the mini-30 a 7.62x39 (.311) or (.308) something i heard but have forgotten. Thanks.

Mini-30 is indeed a 7.62X39, but they are close to $800+taxes.
Now if these were $650...?

Otherwise I'd go the CZ-858

I'd wager a sizeable chunk of money that I can reload and fire my Yugo via stripper clips as fast/faster the an SKS-D, the actual loading may be a little longer but the ability to shoot quickly right after would even it out, id bet
