Hello, I was wondering if anybody has as much trouble as I do when trying to insert the mag into the rifle. My D came with two lame 10rnd pinned AK mags. One seems to go in "all right", in as much as I can get it in. The other one I gave up on. Here I am at the range, trying to stick this tiny little ###Xer into the well, weaving all over the place in order to try to see why it's not fitting, so I retired that mag for the day! Any advice on fitting proceedures ie. filing/grinding of the mag lips. I guess the bump could be the offender. I'll get a 30/5 soon anyway, but in the meantime any info would be appreciated. Pete

You have to "roll" the magazines in. Get the front in place first then roll mag back over the catch.

Do a search on AK-47 magazine installation and you should be able to find graphics somewhere.

Take the top edge of the mag catch on the back of the mag and file this edge down carefully so it is not sharp. Also do this to the corners of this edge. The problem with the mag insertion is that the short mags do not have enough leverage to insert easily. By taking off this edge on some of the mags it allows the mag to be inserted easier without hanging up on the mag release lever. The occasional mag is also too deep in this catch and needs to be trimmed down somewhat. Even though the 30/5 mags can't be used to their capacity they are much easier to insert.

Can you insert the mags when they are empty? I had trouble with my 5 rounder mag that came with my SKS-D and it turns out that when the mag was full (5 rounds), the bolt would push down on the ammunition, the follower would not depress enough and the mag could not lach... I had to dissasemble a few mags and file down the follower...

Thanks P of P and Shrapnel, that sounds like the answers. How did you get the follower out of the mag to fit it? I'll try both methods as I feel the follower is hard to depress, and the mags are still difficult to insert empty. They seem to bind on the rear swing after hooking in the front. And I can see the leverage thing is an issue with the 10/5 mag. I'll start filing. Thanks.

the mag should have a small detent dead center on the bottom. push in and slide the bottom plate off, this will allow you to strip the mag. On some of the norinco 5 rounders, they are 10 rnd mags with elongated flanges that hit the bottom of the mag when loaded up. if the flanges are a lil too long, you will not fit 5 rounds when trying to put in the rifle. strip the mag and remove a milimeter or two at a time from the bottom of the flanges, equally, reassemble and try the fit again. be careful to not cut away too much or your mag will exceed 5 round capacity.

Thanks 45ACP, great info. I'll give that a whirl. I didn't know about the detent. And I won't take too much off as we wouldn't want to open up that can of worms! Pete

stupid question and probably too late but do the mags load fine if the bolt is pulled open and held there while inserting the mags?i had to do this with my little 5 rounders

The SKS was never intended to use detachable mags it will work best if the bolt is held open to insert.
As with the non detach mags, the bolt rides "Inside" the mag somewhat, this means that the bolt has to be opne to insert the mags. Just seems to work better that way!!

I had the same problem with one of my mags as well. Was difficult to remove as well. Almost needed three hands. I solved the problem by selling it. :dancingbanana:

Auggie D.

I must have gotten lucky with my SKS-D and all the AK47 mags (plain steel mags) that I got from Lever Arms ages ago.

This is how I reload an SKS-D. Been doing it for years and swear by it.

Metal AK mags are tough as hell, got zero concerns about damage to them from slapping them out of my way.
