SKS D mag insertion

I had the same problem with one of my mags as well. Was difficult to remove as well. Almost needed three hands. I solved the problem by selling it. :dancingbanana:

Auggie D.

I had an SKS D years ago and found it very finnicky and a complete pain in the ass. I ended up selling it for way more than I paid for it and bought a CZ-858. Problem solved. I don't understand why there is such a demand for these rifles.

I have both and agree that they are very finicky but there very rare and what you can't have people want!!

I have 2 of them. Best thing I ever did was swapped the trigger groups between both the rifles. Now I have non matching number SKS trigger groups but all mags now work in both rifles LOL........ For the most part I had to file down feed lips and back tab of the mags for reliable fitting. If you have multiple AK mags you will notice that different manufactures have slight differences in the feed lip lengths. I find that this is the single biggest issue for my M models (different release than D) and by carefully and slowly fling the feed lips down you can get very nice feeding and fitted mags.

I have 6 sks-d's that have passed through my hands, 4 that I currently still have. The issue is not the rifles themselves but the mags. Mags may need a little filing on the back locking tab. Here is what I have found. Russian "bakelite" 5/30(used), chinese steel 5/30 flat back(used), Magpul Pmag 5/30(new), Korean 5/30(new) work without issue. No filing required on rear tab. ALL NEW chinese 5/10 steel mags that I have encountered needed filing to work in any of my rifles. Tabs varied from .140" - .210". I'm not sure what nominal is but anything over .150" is hard to insert and I slowly file, measure and test fit until I'm around .130" - .140" and I've never had an issue since. I also round off the tabs on the upper side of the locking tab VERY slightly and then polish to help with insertion.

The mags just kind of suck. Sorry, but it is an adaptation and they don't work perfectly. I have owned a few and they all suffered from the same issue. Terrible mag insertions. The 30s are definitely better than the 5s, but still way worse than an AR, VZ58, m305, mini 14, or 10/22. just saying. I am sure that some commandoes will chime in and correct me, but they are just kind of more of a novelty than a practical item. I could stripper clip 5 rounds into a conventional faster that I could replace a mag on the D any day. I only ever used steel AK mags so maybe other mags would be better. Good luck with it.
