Does anyone else have and SKS D marked MC-5D? I had no idea this variant existed.

It takes the AK mags but the mag release looks like that of a regular sks. At first I thought it was a regular sks which had been bubba'd but then I searched it and found more info. If interested see the link attached to see what I am talking about.

If anyone else has this model, do you find the mags feel loose once in the rifle but does not affect the action when firing.

Not sure which one you are talking about, but in one of the pics on that board it does not look like an AK mag to me, but an aftermarket detachable SKS mag, with a mag release extension.

In the 90's a detach mag version of the sks was made availlable in a more robust wood stock with a rubber buttpad. It came with a mag release/trigger group that is the same as the fixed mag version... the slider release. This version was marketted to north america as a hunting rifle. It is my belief after examining the two that I own, that these are nothing more than fixed mag versions, modified to accept detachable shorty mags.
Every attempt i made to use a 30 round mag (pre ban) failed as the weight of the full mag and the recoil of the rifle, caused the 30 rnder to fall out of the gun while firing  . This Variant if it can be called that was NOT intended for the 30 rnd mags, just the shorties. It does accept all standard sks/ak magazines. I took the trigger group apart and installed a heavier spring in the mag release..... this did not work as it adversly affected trigger pull and did nothing to securely hold a 30 rnd mag. Now, these tests were done prior to us having to plug the mags to 5 rnds, so a 30 mag with only 5rnds may work, but yes, the mag will be lose and in my opinion SHOULD NOT BE USED IN THIS VERSION as it is definately a safety issue.

when i was looking for a "D" , i would look at the mag catch first, if it had a AK style catch then i would interested. most of what i seen lately are the AK catch type.
