SKS-D What's the going price, and are they any good?

I'm sure you can find answers to your questions in the SKS subforum in milsurp.

Lots of people have them and just like any other norinco there are big fans and big haters. Personally I would just buy a standard sks. They are much cheaper and have last shot bolt hold, which the D model does not. I find it easier to top load a regular model with stripper clips much faster than any mag change. Otherwise they share most components with each other and as such are built fairly rugged and will probably hold up better than you would to any abuse.

Price is a sticky issue as no one sells them new anymore. People can offer whatever the market can hold. I wouldn't pay more than $300 (and that's pushing it) but I have seen them listed for $500.00.

I like my 165 dollar SKS with the five round fixed mag. Is it really worth the exstra fore a five round removable mag?

It isn't the fact it comes with a detachable mag, it's the fact that it takes AK-47 style detachable mags! The LCF is enormous!

They are exatcly like any other SKS exept the magazine, and the lack of a bolt hold open.

They are up in value (the past few months) because they are scarce on the market...prob' one of our few suppliers are sitting on a bunch waiting for prices to be higher so they can make a better return then the original duck bill mag ones.

Since we are limited to 5 rnds anyway by our stupid laws then a Big AK banana mag is kind'a silly, IMHO. And one can load the duck billed ones faster anyway, as they can be loaded with chargers/strippers, and they have a bolt hold open, which the AK mag ones do not.

About the only time I could see the Ak mags would be handy is during hunting were you are getting in and out of a vehicle all day, and even then if they where the after market 5 rnd ones from the USA, so you don't have a long mostly empty magazine catching in the brush.

But what ever floats your boat. :)

Thanks a lot fellows...it is definitely the "Look Cool Factor" that attracts me. :D

I didn't realize the bolt hold open thing...that's not really a big deal to me though.

Ardent, I'll let you know if I decide I "need" one. :)

If you're going for the "Look-Cool Factor" might as well get a regular Norinco and fit a non-detachable box magazine onto it. John Masen makes these mags and I've owned one. It would have trouble feeding, but after I filed the lips down slightly it would cycle normally. However just like the D model, these mags would not hold the bolt open after the last shot. Here's a pic of the mag:

Oh and like Slicknick said, 99.98% percent of all the aftermarket magazine available for the SKS-D will not function properly and they're not interchangeable with AK mags either.

I can't understand why some SKS's are listed for sale at $300+ dollars "used" when you can pick one up for $150 "new". I'm freakin baffled!!

I've got a couple pinned AK47 mags and they work perfectly fine in my SKS-D. I was under the impression that SKS models "D" and "M" were made specifically for the purpose of accepting AK mags, rather than having the standard fixed mag.

Isn't the duckbill thing done to be able to use special detchables on any SKS?

Here is where things get funky...

With the original SKS rifles you pretty much have the duckbilled mags 10/5, and the AK mags whatever/5.

Then we have a large selection of BUBBAS...which are the variants that where made for marketing, and never issued to the Chinese Army...including such gems as the "special forces/paratrooper SKS" that was simply a bubba'ed SKS for marketing only...etc.

So if I was going to buy and SKS D, which I might have to now that you loons are talking about it... :D

I'd buy an AK magazine (Whatever size pinned to 5), and buy or make some snapcaps/dummy ammo, and bring them to the store with me, and with permission of the store owner try the magazine out insert, and removal...many times, and cycling the bolt, and seeing if it feeds the dummy ammo OK etc.

If you are buying online make sure the seller can assure you that the SKS D that you are getting truly can take other AK Mags.
