So I just got a sks from cabelas on sale. I'm stripping the rifle for its first cleaning and I can't remove the magazine from the action. I've removed everything else, the trigger group, bolt ad recoil assembly and the gas system. any tips would be appreciated. thanks.

On my Russian one I had to pull the entire gun out of the stock. Then the Mag came out through the top. But I was putting it in a different stock so I tossed it and went with the Bauer arms Banana mags.

Its been a while since I had a SKS... but if my memory serves me right, pulling the latch in front of the trigger group back, opens the mag. Removing the trigger group unlocks the mag,It should come out with the bolt back or removed. With "new" ones, the goop glues them right to the wood,so for the initial remove, some force might be required, after that it should come out easy.

With the trigger group removed grab the
magazine at the rear and pull downward,
it may take a little force

You can wobble it out by rocking it once you remove the trigger group, open the magazine and take all the bolt assembly out easier. Spray it with WD40 or 3 in 1 if you cant get it out and let it sit for an hr.

You shouldn't need to use tools at all.

Some of the mags are in real tight. If your magazine is non matching then likely it was switched during pinning of the mag. Then they can end up fitting tight. You may have to use a set of needle nose pliers to grab it and pull down to get it out. A lot of these latest ones are like that. You can take a file and slowly file off the "hook" at the front of the magazine that engages the front of the mag/ forward of the magazine well in the receiver. Slowly take bit at a time till it fits and removes nicely. Then degrease and touch the bare metal with some cold blue and oil. Good to go.

After the first cleaning it will be easier. It's possible your magazine has been in that stock for a very long time. Tap it out from the top if you can't wiggle it out.
Congrats on joining the sks crowd with the rest of us budget shooters

This! And go very slow filing it down. You don't want it sloppy loose.
