HI; I do not wish to chase reloading 762X39 brass around the range.
Do I, remove the gas piston?
take off the gas tube and piston, will there be much gas venting out the port?

There are YouTube videos and threads here on how to drill a small hole in the tube, which lessens the pressure and helps the shells drop closer than before! It needs to be done right and with the load you are going to fire if you want to tune it properly! A good idea would be to buy an extra tube so you will leave the original one stock!

In some US states, hunters are allowed to perform a semi-auto-to-bolt-action modification on their SKS-- so that hunting with the sks can be legal.

Remove the piston and re-install the empty gas tube.
There will varying degrees of blow back as excess gas escapes through the gas ports and around seals.

You could also craft an angled screen or netting in a frame to catch your spent casings. I've seen plenty of DIY ejection screens at probalby every outdoor range I've been to. One range in Northern California had a screen between every shooting bench. Makes for good range neighbors too.

Another alternative that doesn't require any mods to the rifle is to get a magnetic picker upper from somewhere like Princess Auto. They are about 2 feet long and cost around $20. I picked up over 100 casings in about 2 minutes at the range today. You can usually pick up several at a time and I just dump them in a can that I hold in my other hand. No bending or stooping required but you do have to find them after the SKS has ejected the damn things! This only works for the cheap steel stuff☹️
