Does anyone know what the original finish on Russian SKS's was? I don't think it was shiny reconditioned blue like they arrive over here?

Metal finishes can also be RE-BLUED or simply BLUED at refurb as well. The later with regard to bayonets. Original bluing can be dull or shiney, depending on the arsenal, year of production, exposure to cleaning chemicals and environments of use, and of course, level of use.

Hi when I bought my first sks russian import, when they just hit our shores, I got a total refurb with crossouts, squares, and the heaviest BBQ paint ever witnessed. The saving grace was the laminate stock that I figured I should have. After shooting it for awhile I couldnt handle the nasty paint anymore. Strictly personal. Heres the link to the final solution. The blueing is darker than some of the shots and was done with outers blue.. More blueing has been done since this was posted. I'm way happier with the look now and just need to buff the bolt for the finished look. So if you get stuck with a diamond in the rough, the final solution may be your answer. Strictly personal. Cheers

Was your bolt carrier also painted with it. I have read of others having problems with it flaking badly and clogging up the internals. When it is that thick and it is a refurb I don't think you can go too wrong cleaning it up as you did. It is not like you are devaluing a safe queen there. Ultimately if your happy with it, that is all that counts...

Yup all black, from head to toe. I agree! I'm way happier now as it looks like a real rifle !! There wasnt any type of stripper that I found that could tackle that paint. That sh$t is probably the best stuff to stop rust but it didnt tickle my fancy. I like the used look. Kind of like the shiney well used M16 in vietnam
