Sks feed jam

Hello,

I recently purchased a Russian sks in good condition . I field stripped it and cleaned it down to the firing pin and channel oiled it and put it back together and it's cosmoline free and clean. Took it out shoot last Sun and the problem is on the last round it would stove pipe a live round and not feed obviously .The empty case before the malfunction is extracted so I don't think it's a extractor issue. This will only happen with two rounds or more in the mag and when I fire rapid or take slow shots it's the same results. I loaded 5 dummy rounds and racked the slide as fast and as slow as I can but I cannot reproduce the malfunction and it extracted the dummy rounds 100% of the time. Ammo used is Barnaul 123 grain non corrosive fmj. Any suggestions? Bad mag? Worn op rod/recoil springs? (gas piston and op rod is very good cond) And it's the original 10/5 round pinned mag it comes with. All matching numbers except the mag and also the gas tube moves left/right I would say a quite a bit with a very tiny back and fourth play and the lever is lock all the way down and all parts are installed properly including the the wavy part of the recoil spring toward the bolt.
Stove pipe is with the nose of the bullet facing up as it was going to feed. Stock sks fixed magazine with it limited to 5. Help please.

Like this? I have had the same problem, never did figure it out. The culprit seems to be the feed ramp not being straight and level, or so most of the people who looked at it thought. But to be honest my feed ramp looks fine, perhaps a tad crooked now that I look at it.

It will scratch it like this

And dent the cartridge like this (only pic I had...)

Otherwise my gun is in perfect working order.

I have the same problem. I used Bernaul in my rifle as well. I changed the fixed-mag out, tried using Tapco and ProMag detachable magazines with the same result, even when I used a clip to load. Maybe its a gas pressure related thing that the recoil spring does something weird before feeding the last round? Is the last round feeding faster or too fast since it can't happen manually? Is it the gas-tube? Is it the piston? Is it the ammo or mags? Maybe my rifle just hates me.

The final round failure is a secret my rifle keeps, I dont think I'll ever know what it is.

I recently watched a video of SKS in action in Ukraine. When they load loose rounds they load bolt closed with the mag platform open from the bottom. The stack them neatly against the rear and then close the mag platform.

How is your magazine pinned? Big ugly rivet or pin attached to the follower? In the case of the latter I've seen some pins that were poorly installed and didn't allow the follower to rotate properly. The guns would function fine for the first few shots then jam on the fourth and/or fifth round. The big ugly rivet through the bottom of the magazine is functionally better but ugly as sin.

If the pin is the culprit, it needs to be carefully relieved to allow the follower to tip further and line up the last cartridge properly. A Dremel is your friend on this one.

Wow that's exactly how mines looked with the stove pipe and the cartridge dent. I've searched the whole week on google trying to figure out the issue with no luck and I finally found someone with the same issue. It sucks cause obviously we want are rifles functioning flawlessly but I guess its trial and error from here. Nice red dot mount I never seen one mounted in that place before..how does she hold zero? Take a look at my feed ramp/mag lips btw and tell me what you think and everyone else's opinion.

Take a look and tell me what you think. The rivet protrudes on top slightly...maybe you think the round is somehow hooking on it throwing it off the feeding path?

I think our rifles are on the same page man their not telling us something lol, I was actually thinking of getting the tapco intrafuse stock with the tapco mag but now im having doubts...

Really? I would never think of doing that..maybe theres a reason why, I will have to try that out and see if it makes any diff. Thanks for the info

Its the bc tactical scout mount. Has held zero for over 500 rounds so far. Works like a charm. I had a small issue with the odd casing ejecting and hitting the lens, so i grinded down the ejection port and now they eject to the right.

40Cal, I had the exact same problem with my 1951 Tula. It would stovepipe the last live round before feeding it into the chamber on probably 25-35% of the full magazines run through it. It came with the stick-type pin riveted to the follower, just like the picture you show of your mag internals. It was driving me nuts - I even put a bit of MIG weld deposit on the front and rear of the follower to parallel the pin sticking up, no difference. My buddy has a Chinese SKS that he has modded with ATI stock and Tapco mags, so gave me his old mag. It has a big, thick slug of steel riveted to the bottom of the magazine, which limits it to 5 rounds. I installed it, and have now run another 50 rounds through it, no problems. See if you can find one of these and your gun will cycle properly.

Really? That's interesting and very good to know...so most likely its the mag which I kinda figured and hoping. I will try that for sure, all I have to do is get my hand on a Chinese mag now. Thanks man I appreciate the info. How did the tapco mags run in his sks anyway?

I sold several of those with the pin attached to the follower. The very first one needed to be tinkered with (Dean did the honors). It worked fine after, and all the others didn't seem to give trouble.

I kept one of those for my own pile. Hope it works!

Update-Thanks everyone for their advice much appreciated...So I took my tula out today and put about 75 rounds through her without any malfunctions...turns out the last round was catching on the rivet through the follower in the space right above the cartridge rim (do not know the proper term)and was hooking it in that space causing it to pitch up and miss feed. I took out the old file and worked the rivet smooth and presto smooth like butter.
