Hello,

I recently purchased a Russian sks in good condition . I field stripped it and cleaned it down to the firing pin and channel oiled it and put it back together and it's cosmoline free and clean. Took it out shoot last Sun and the problem is on the last round it would stove pipe a live round and not feed obviously .The empty case before the malfunction is extracted so I don't think it's a extractor issue. This will only happen with two rounds or more in the mag and when I fire rapid or take slow shots it's the same results. I loaded 5 dummy rounds and racked the slide as fast and as slow as I can but I cannot reproduce the malfunction and it extracted the dummy rounds 100% of the time. Ammo used is Barnaul 123 grain non corrosive fmj. Any suggestions? Bad mag? Worn op rod/recoil springs? (gas piston and op rod is very good cond) And it's the original 10/5 round pinned mag it comes with. All matching numbers except the mag and also the gas tube moves left/right I would say a quite a bit with a very tiny back and fourth play and the lever is lock all the way down and all parts are installed properly including the the wavy part of the recoil spring toward the bolt.
Stove pipe is with the nose of the bullet facing up as it was going to feed. Stock sks fixed magazine with it limited to 5. Also the rivet protrudes through the follower..maybe the last round is getting hung up on the rivet? Help please.

Does the magazine follower spring put good tension on the follower? Can the follower swivel properly on its arm? (Sometimes the pin is added in a way that causes binding) and do the feed lips appear bent? (Most notable the one on the left that feeds the last round)

Make sure that thing can swivel or it bungs your last round.

Check too to make sure your recoil spring is inserted into the bolt carrier properly. The squiggly end goes into the bolt carrier with the straight end is captured by your receiver cover. The other way around the SKS can operate but the spring can catch not allowing the bolt carrier to cycle all the way back causing feeding problems.

Spring tension is strong and it swivels freely and feed lips look fine...figuring it has something to do with the way its pinned. I'll try a tapco mag and see whats the issue.

My new sks does the same thing every couple mags cycles, it's pinned the same way as well. I found the bottom of the pinned post was rough, I took a diamond file to the edge and de burred it which hopefully will solve it. My other sks is riveted from the bottom of the mag and does not stovepipe the last round, the method of rivet is the problem as far as I can tell. Going out to the bush next Friday and will test out my theory.

Another reason I buy up any nicely pinned SKS mags with good rotatating followers whenever I come across them. Got a handful of them. My numbers matching guns have their mags pulled and set aside and utilize better functioning ones.

look at where the pin meets the follower. Mine wasn't cut right so the follower couldn't pivot. It work fine with the first few rounds but if it was loaded with just one it would jam and fail to feed.

Ended up the problem was indeed the pin . It was in so tight that tapping lightly with a hammer allowed the follower to swivel just enough that the cartridges then pointed up away from the mag and towards the chamber . Thanks for all the input.
