I am currently re-assembling a SKS I am cleaning, and I have firing pin type #4 from http://www.simonov.net/uberpin.htm

I am under the impression that the firing pin was incorrectly installed when I took it apart. Can anyone confirm if the closest hump to where the pin will hit the primer goes up or down in the bolt? it was facing down and the firing pin retaining pin was hard as hell to get loose. I think the pin was upside down...?

The pin is 'sposed to be tight :D Having the firing pin installed upside down will have no effect on how tight the retaining pin is. Just off the top of my head, I think the "small hump" goes on top. The UberPin FAQ page you linked to seems to corroborate this (all 4 pins have the primer end on the right, and are oriented with the correct side facing up as it would be if it were installed in a bolt). Don't quote me on this though, I'm not 100% sure. Hope that helps!

Trick

There's a sure fire way of determining wether the pin is right or wrong: Place the block on a table edge and look through the retaining pin hole.
Slide the firing pin inside the bolt. With the firing pin wrong, you'll see a small amount of metal showing where there isn't supposed to be any. Turn the firing pin the other side and the cutout will clear the way completely.
It is that small amount of interference that can allow the firing pin to flex just enough to let the retaining pin go through even though it is not supposed to.
Once the hammer strikes the firing pin, it will be driven forward, protruding, and stay that way. Next round will be a runaway.
Easy check for this: shake the cleaned and assembled block; the firing pin should be rattling free.

Thanks PP, damn no wonder my friend said he was having slamfires all the time

I was going to buy it from him once I had a look at the bolt, I figured it was just dirty :p He wanted to get rid of it.

Lucky me! I will try it on the range this weekend. Thanks again.

And for the record, it should be pointed up, not down. ;)
