What's going on? I had zero problems with my SKS for the year I've had it but just last time I took it to the range, a few times it let loose several rounds on one pull of the trigger... I was fairly alarmed, and am wondering whether the rifle is still safe to shoot.

Can anyone tell me what the problem would be, what part(s) I might need to fix or replace? Should I stop using the rifle immediately?

No. Your rifle is NOT safe to shoot.

If you have an "out of battery discharge" you are risking serious injury.

That being said there are a few things you can do. I've owned two SKS rifles in my life but have never had this problem so my knowledge is limited but here is what I can think of:

1. Check for free movement of your firing pin, if it doesn’t move freely use some solvent and oil to clean it up and then proceed to step 2. If your pin moves easily it needs to go to a professional so you need not procced with step 2.

2. with an empty rifle (usual safety cautions apply), charge the rifle then pull the trigger, while keeping your trigger depressed still, pull the charging handle back again and allow it to "slam" forward and see if the hammer follows. If it does you've got a bad sear engagement and it needs to be taken to a qualified gun smith.

This is the extent of my knowledge. I hope things work out for you but I must emphasize that it is not safe to shoot in its current state.

Jeff

Hint!
The firing pin MAY be installed backwards.....
Strip and disassemble bolt ,carefully note its present position and turn it around, re-install.

Test after assembly dry (no ammo):
1/After successful re/assembly of rifle.

2/ENSURE rifle is clear of ammo

3/#### weapon and pull trigger on empty chamber, rifle clicks once. Release trigger.

4/#### weapon again, if the hammer stays forward, with the trigger pulled, and maintain trigger pressure, after weapon cocked, without ammo, you still have a problem.

this may be your problem.....

1) what kind of ammo was this? factory? reloads? milsurp?

2) have you ever taken the bolt apart?

3) how do you clean the bolt parts normally?

Follow all the usual safe gun handling procedures...when you have checked that the gun is empty and safe...insert gun into garbage bin.

replaced the sear ring, simple as that! order a few from SKSMAN.COM and you're done.
I'm trying to understand how changing the sear spring(I think that's what you mean) and again I asume to a stiffer spring?, does this change a multi- fire situation?
And I wouldn't just turn the firing pin the other way or upside down and shoot it! The pin only works ONE way! Don't experiment with it or you could get hurt or wreck your rifle at the least. Get the info off the net and put it together right. On mine I could see a wear mark where the keeper pin sat on the F.Pin. The keeper pin goes between the two bumps on the fp and has about a 1/4 " of play when assembled. The other side(wrong side) of the fp doesn't allow movement because the bump is in the wrong place

I bet the bolt mainspring was put back into the rifle backwards...ie the wiggly bunched up part has to go into the bolt carrier, not hang out in the receiver...as it can cause drag in some rifles.

You MUST be young if your Mom was telling you to check the website "when (you) were a kid" :)

LOL wish I was... when you have teenage kids I don't think you can consider yourself young anymore.........I was just refering to the don't be lazy line, not necessarily the website part.:D

Before looking elsewhere just check this:
What ammo did you fire? is it commercial or surplus?Commercial can be sensitive with softer primers.
Did you previously disassemble your firing pin/breech block assembly? You could easily remount the firing pin with its underside facing up; this makes the pin stick out after the first firing and you get repeat slamfirings on subsequent rounds.
Was the firing pin channel flushed completely with brake cleaner then blown with compressed air? Once more, a dirty firing pin channel can lead to slamfires with a sluggish or sticky firing pin.
Good luck!!
