There are two bolt designs. Early (1949 to mid 1950) and Late (mid 1950 to 1958)
There are three types of soviet firing pins:
-Type I is spring loaded (1949 to mid 1950). It will only work in the early bolt. It will not function or fit in a late style bolt.
-Type II is a flat bodied firing pin (mid 1950-1952)
-Type III is a triangular bodied firing pin. (1952-1958)
Types II and III are interchangeable and will only work in the late style bolt. They will not function or fit in an early bolt.
Anyone know the history of why the spring loaded firing pin was abandoned after just a few years in favour of the floating pin? Are there advantages to the floating pin, apart, perhaps, from simplified manufacturing?
