SKS for CQB

You ask if it is competitive but don't care about score just want to have fun

Nobody does anything with the intent of coming in 2nd place. Keep that in mind and buy what your budget will allow

Loading 4 rounds would appear to be the solution. That way you could reload an empty rifle after each shoot and not reload against the clock.

BUT - that would be cheating. The load-out is 5. Reloads too.

Hmmm - I think we would have to ask the MD about that. Technically you are loading less than the maximum allowed. That would be a disadvantage.

Now, using coupled mags......that isn't fair :p (kidding, just kidding)

As I recall, the command is "With a 5 round rifle magazine...LOAD". Using stripper clips is not loading a magazine. By strict interpretation of the commands and load out, you can not use any rifle that does not use a detachable magazine? I don't think that is the intent.

To be honest, if a guy loads 4 rounds from strippers in an SKS and ends up beating my score......I am not going to complain.

In fact I am going to go home and try to forget it happened. :D

absolutely right ganderite, i did CQB 3 times with my SKS a long time ago.,. i tried the 4 round load out once and it was easier.. i went back to the 5 round load out later because the whole point of the CQB exercise is to learn to reload under pressure, and to push the limits of your gear and your abilities.

I would suggest taking your SKS to the range with a bunch of clips with 5 rnds on them.
I find that with half full clip the first round doesn't always rest against the round stop so the round binds a bit when you push down.
I have not tried cutting my clips down, it might work if you have some spare clips.
But overall if you are going to compete with it, get a lot of practice on the reload to get the time down.

Sks cqb

SKS for CQB? absolutely! you have to get a little creative with the reloading.. i did CQB twice with my sks and i learned a few tricks.. i am willing to share them.. :D

please do! would you happen to have any video footage? youtube uploads?
if you're not inclined to post the tricks, could i PM you for more discussion?

There is a vid from last fall, CQB 7. You should be able to find it with a search on the first couple of pages on this particular sub-forum.

CQB can definatley be done with an SKS. You need stripper clips and to really think about how you load them and the rifle. At some stages you need to load 5 in the mag and then stuff one in the chamber to keep your reloads matching the mag changes for other competitors and to make the time limit.

In the end, SKS users are at a competitive disadvantage. This can be overcome to some degree with forethought/experience and practice.

However an SKS user is not at a disadvantage in testing themselves and their equipment. Nor are they at a disadvantage at having fun at a match and to me that is the most important part of it all.
