Been reading the sks section for a while and noticed a lot of people having probs with lever arms and SIR regarding their SKS'. I was thinkin of ordering one from marstar... Any pros/cons with them?

I don't know yet. Mine's in the mail.

Like you, I researched before buying. I didn't find a specific Marstar issue, but the main issue seems to be screwed or pinned barrels. This debate is inconclusive, I think.

Also, while some SKS's are packed in cosmoline, Marstar guy told me that theirs are shipped in an oil thinner than cosmo.

Now that I put in my two cents, we'll let the real experts take over.

Threads on S.I.R you read were probably from me. In the end, I received a never issued rifle, was in new cond. and it also was not caked in cosmoline, but more of a heavy oil. and it was the ammo I bought elsewhere that was no good. The only issue I had with them was that when I ordered I was assured there was a 30 day refund or exchange policy, but later found out that is not true on military surplus. I am guessing the lady taking the calls was not aware of this policy and treated the military guns the same as a new rifle for warranty. After reading all the relpies to my posts, I feel confident that if I had needed to, that S.I.R would have done something to make me happy.(LOL I hope) if it truely was the rifle with the problem. I always like to give someone a second chance, and will give them one also. The SKS's from Marstar do have pinned barrels like V65 mentioned, but they do advertise giving a one yr. warranty. Unfortunately, I believe their website indicates the SKS's are already sold out.

I bought a Norinco semi-auto M14 kit from SIR a number of years ago. The stock was warped to one side. They exchanged the stock and all was well. I believe they will try to make things right.

for me, there wasnt much price difference between lever and marstar, marstar was $10 cheaper but i would have to fork out shipping so it would end up $10-15 more, i would gladly pay more if i felt i was getting a better product. i didnt .

i recently bot 2 sks from lever , simply bcos i could handle, pick and chose, i got both threaded barrels and all matching numbers, true, lever has more pinned and mismatch but that was the beauty of buying in person, i dont have to buy what they shipped me.

the issue of bad pinned barrel from lever has long gone, last year story, i havent heard of any more problem since.

regardless of where you buy your sks from, it will still be a thrill when you first fire it.

Ive ordered a handful of rifles from Marstar and had nothing but great experiences with them. Only reason I bought from them is I found them first for a K98 and havent looked back.

As mentioned before the barrel types only matter when some jackalope has for some reson decided to mix and match the two types. Ie shoving a non-thread barrel into a threaded receiver, and hoping a pin would help.

I believe these have been sorted through, and were a rarity.
But just to be safe, one should take there SKS apart and give it a good look over.

Another area that often gets over looked is what type of Hammer/Sear Engagement does your SKS have?

Check this out, and soon as the site is going down. :(

Damn... Mangrum is an awesome guy, sad to hear what he's going through...

Any SKS lovers out there HAVE to hit that site and read (AND SAVE!) every page he has on the SKS, or any other rifle he's got in there that you happen to like.

isn't Marstar out? sold-out? :( I was thinking of getting one as a backup, but I went yesterday and it was listed (like every other rifle that interests me at Marstar) as sold out...

Calum, what is the sear/engagement stuff all about?

Losing Surplusrifle.com sucks .
That was a great site with tons of info that is difficult at best to find elsewhere .
It's a shame it couldn't be continued with some one new at the helm .
The guys who run that sight are first rate , sad to here what happened .

What happened to the guy running surplusrifle.com?

Just checked the website, found out the guy has cancer. That's too bad :(

Is it worth buying the Big CD-ROM 1 and 2? for $20USD shipped it looks like a good deal. Anyone have them?

The site covers it better then I could.
In any event if your SKSs falls into an unfavorable category it is an easy fix.

Besides following basic Acts and Prove will keep you safe in any event.
