Ok, i have drove out the pin and tryed to get it off but had no luck although i didnt have much in the eay of tools on hand when i tried.

its a Norc serial #9411###

so 2 questions
1. what can you tell me about the gun from the serial?
2. will the part come off? and if it dose will it still meet the barrel legalitys for non-restricted (i'm sure it must but ... this is the cfc were talking about)

Thanks all
Joe

i've used a rubber mallet for the task but found a sturdy block of wood and a hammer to do it quite nicely. knock out the two retaining pins and then set the block behind the bayo lug and wack it with the hammer a couple times then switch the block to behind the sight and do the same. repeat until it comes off. If this don't work, consult a gun smith i guess. As far as legality goes, nothing to worry about, you are not altering the barrel length by removing this part.

Official barrel measurement is from face of closed bolt to face of muzzle. Easiest way is to use a rod.

Crash,
The only Chinese SKSs that you can date by the SN are the original factory Triangle 26 guns and the Sino-Soviet models which came the first year of production. Triangle 26 is the only factory whose startup date is known.

Cheers

I had one removed too! I had to go to a machine shop and used a press to push it out. The hammer could not do the job in my case. But with the press it came out easy w/o damaging the barrel.

As Shrek says, sometimes you need a press. I did remove one by carefully thinning the wall of the tube with Dremmel tool & cutting wheel (I cut a shallow slot the length of the tube), then splitting it. The downside is that it's very tough to do this without accidentally cutting too deep, and into the barrel.
