Hi,

Quick question: A friend has asked me to replace the sights on his SKS with peep sights and a red front post. Not a problem. I've done it a half dozen times. Easy operation.

Except for this rifle... The front sight post will not turn - not even a little. I've broken a sight tool, a pair of needle nose pliers and a steel jig that I cut myself from a thick drill bit that was like the front sight tool but 100X stronger. I even tried drilling it out. Nada.

Has anyone ever come up against an un-turnable front sight - and if so, what the hell did you do to get it out?

Thanks.

Wow, that's a new problem I haven't seen. I'd reccomend propping the rifle up in a corner, muzzle end down in a bowl of penetrant (WD40 or Kroil) for three days before trying again. Was it staked in? Look for punch marks either side of the post thread. Worst case, dremmel it out, remove with an end-mill and heli-coil the hole... Might, unfortunately need to pay for machining, which might cost as much as the rifke:(

I think I'll try that - thanks. And, as the11 says, maybe a bit of heat too.

Have you ever regretted starting a project...?

I forgot to mention the SOP I learned working on steam turbines, yes, heat it before you beat it. And try using a micro-torch to concentrate on the outer portion. Differential heating can help break loose whatever is stuck.

...and I may have lamented a project when it turns ugly, but never regretted it!

Good luck!
