I don't believe the holes are over pressure ports. The holes are there to allow the piston to move freely when the gas tube is pressurized. With out the holes the air behind the piston would provide resistance and not allow the piston to move easily! I also don't believe the piston should move past the holes. If anyone has a piston that moves past the holes in the side of the gas tube please let me know! The piston travel only needs to be about 1.5 inches or so...enought to kick the bolt back but it does not need to push it all the way.

You could be right there. I didn't think about that.

The piston doesn't go all the way through the tube. Not on any of mine. When you think about it, why would it. It just has to give the op rod a good smack to get the bolt carrier moving back

well....looks like thats it. when i got the rifle, the gas piston move freely all the way back, past the vent holes. now for whatever reason (probably rust) it only moves right up to the holes and no further. and the functioning of the rifle is unaffected. so....i dont care. its all good to go. i'll just make sure to do a i better job cleaning the tube from now on i guess
