I got a "new" sks that appears to have some rust in the gas tube causing it to slow the gas piston down to a complete stop. Any ideas how to clean this out quickly? I don't think a bore brush will fit and I keep getting stuff stuck in it trying to scrub it out because the rust is causing it to catch.

Also noticed the gas tube has some rust under the guard and the receiver under the wood has some rust and pitting. Ideas how to make this look cosmetically better?

Update. Thanks guys. It was cleaned out! Looks like new now.

Does the piston get jammed when firing? Or only when removed from the rifle?

Keep in mind that the piston travels less than one inch back and forth when firing (3/4" iirc). So if it's only getting jammed when you let if fall free hand into the piston tube when disassembled, it's actually not a problem at all.

Can you post close up photos of the piston head-- top view and side view?

To remove lite surface rust , apply a light coat of gun oil and using light back and forth motions gently scrub it out with quadruple aught (#0000) steel wool. The superfine steel wool will not damage the bluing, but it will remove lite to moderate surface rust even with minor pitting.

Quite common on poorly maintained surplus SKS rifles. Just gotta brush brush brush and keep an eye out for it the next time u buy an SKS

Gets stuck when firing and sticks like 1 inch into the reciver.

The hole rifle is stripped down right now for inspection.

its actually the piston extension that goes into the receiver, not the piston so disassemble and clean the piston extension and spring in the rear sight block.

Post some pics of the piston head (side view and top view) if you can.

Also, I HIGHLY suggest you watch youtube link I posted concerning the SKS piston assembly.

1.)You have the op-rod (i.e. piston extenstion inside the rear sight block) removed as well?
....The op rod might be the problem too, if there is any burring on the bore inside the rear sight block (rsb) or any defects in the extension spring.

2.) When it jams up when firing, is the op rod (piston extension) protruding from the back of the RSB?

Don't forget, the SKS has TWO pistons. If "1 inch into the receiver" means it is protruding from the back of the RSB, than it is probably an issue with the piston extension, the piston extension bore, or the piston extension spring.

Brass brush on a section of rod, spin it with a drill and move it back and forth in the tube. If the brush won’t fit snug wrap some steel wool around the brush till it’s snug, exactly how you polish an 870 express chamber or smooth bore shotgun barrel.

Rap some steel wool around a drill bit ( so it looks like a QTip ) lite oil ,Diesel fuel,Kerosene or there Lacking cooking oil . Go easily stroking it in nd out .
I recently had troubles with one of mine , I have a replacement gas tube and it would short cycle ( not eject) deburred polished well oiled it but it still wouldn't cycle ended up putting the original one back on . The gas piston either is hanging up or its over size and not sealing enough . So go easy and don't over do it . Remember a SKS was designed to be upkept by the Uneducated Masses, with engine oil and a shoe lace to keep it running .
No drill or bit use your cleaning jag as I mentioned for the drill bit .
Did you check the gas port from the barrel for rust blockage ?
