I've got a Tula 1951 SKS here with a unique bolt assembly.

The firing pin is spring loaded, the extractor/extractor channel is longer than standard and is not held in by a pin. The firing pin itself IS held in by a pin.

What am I looking at here ?

Spring loaded firing pins are usually an aftermarket part upgrade. This is generally done to avoid slamfires (caused by sticky firing pins, hence the spring). The extractor on the other hand sounds quite odd. A picture would help. Ive never heard of any aftermarket extractors for the SKS, but yours could be a custom job or an arsenal experimentation.

Did you buy the rifle new from a dealer?

This is not an aftermarket upgrade.

This is an arsenal refurbished rifle fresh out of the original Russian packing crate.

The bolt was obviously machined exclusively for the spring loaded firing pin, and the non standard extractor, so it was done at a Soviet arsenal.

you got the early bolt , from 1949- part of 1951, the late version has no spring , parts from these two versions are not interchangeable , not even as an assembly (possible head spacing).

a 1950 and early 1951 would be great for hunters who must use commercial soft primers also the barrel is not chrome which is said to be more accurate than chrome liner bore (some may disagree) .

Pardon the OT, but what is the reason non-chrome bores are more accurate? Yugos are non-chrome bore, but are they more accurate?

im no expert in this field but that is what i read , i'll see if i can dig it up .

something about tighter tolerances and precision rifle do not come in chrome bore .
