In my quest for a cheap shooter SKS I picked up this "new" in box one - looks like as it was sold from wholesale sports. The numbers all match, except the mag has an electropenciled number that is different. I assume it's a run-of-the-mill SKS, but I want to make sure it's not special before I start using it. What can you guys tell me about this fine piece of soviet engineering? Thanks for any info!

Just a run of the mill shooter sks, the square with the line through it means refurb, no date on the receiver cover I think that means its a later one like 1955 or 56? Not 100% sure. its a nice looking sks though!

If it's later that means a chrome lined bore, right? Thanks for the info.

Refurb 56-58, nice bluing, have fun, don't forget to clean it well and make sure the firing pin rattles in the bolt, if this is your first, there are lots of YouTube videos on cleaning and even one in the stickies above! Cheers.

Nice SKS, now go beat the sh!t out of it at the range. Run er' hard, that's what they were made for. If corrosive ammo, clean it well and it'll last you a long time. Well made rifles.

If the bore is chrome lined it will be obvious. The chrome plate usually overruns a bit on the muzzle and is starkly obvious against the blued steel.

Good looking SKS. None of my refurbs look that good. My Weimajack does look better than that, but I just keep it to gaze upon.

If there is no obvious chrome at the muzzle, the extreme shine of the bore, compared to every other rifle, is, IMHO proof of a chrome lined bore.
Sometimes if I have nothing better to do, I will slowly twirl an SKS while looking down the bore, to get a kaleidascopic effect from the chrome lining.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I loaded up some ammo tonight - broke down some surplus for the bullets only, and loaded them up in PRVI brass, with a CCI primer and some WC-845 powder. Hopefully I'll get to the range tomorrow. The WC-845 (which I just picked up) is working great in my AR-15, so here's hoping I can get a decent SKS load worked out with it.

That is interesting, please keep us updated, I would be very interested in the results,,, also for the SKS if you grab the barrel and stock and push forward and aft, you can check for looseness in the fit if there is any it can be shimmed out as that will widen out your groups for sure! Good luck!

Well, had her out to the range today, and the ammo ran perfectly. 22 grains of WC845, PRVI case, CCI primer, 123 grain pulled surplus FMJ bullet. Cycled the action well and shot to point of aim at 25 yards. Grouped well except for the one round where I had to watch the ejected brass instead of the irons to see where my nice PRVI brass was going. :)

Second update: range trip #2, this time using 22 grains of WC845, PRVI case, Dominion primer, and cast boolits (Lee 155 grain 312 non tumble lube mold, gas checks applied with a .314 sizer, and tumble lubed). Cycled perfectly, nice grouping at 25 yards. Looks like we have a winner.
