Help!!
I've screwed up and now things may break. Bought an older Norc SKS today off another member. Gun is in great shape and well kept. This is my second SKS and I'm well informed on how to strip and clean these rifles yet I still screwed up today.

I striped it to give her a good cleaning and got to the gas tube removal. The locking lever was a bit sticky and I may have used too much force but the bloody thing rotated all the way up releasing the piston extension. Now the tube is stuck. Anyone know a trick to pry this bugger off without bending or breaking anything.

Thanks

P.S. this rifle must have been bought before the mag cap on semi auto rifles. Is this now prohib to have it take 10 rounds and I have to go buy a capped mag for this thing?

You'll need a mag pinned to 5 round. As I understand it, the 10 round magazine on a rifle is prohibited and you can get in a lot of trouble for having it.

As for the tube, maybe try some penetrating oil to help loosen it? I dunno

I just pulled my 52 Tula apart and the gas tube extension head is wider then the gas tube hole--So it should just be sitting on the face of the upper hand guard. Without seeing your specific problem, I'm guessing it's the "locking gate" that's holding your upper hand guard from being removed. Try putting the take down/ locking lever to the middle position (hand guard removal position) and wiggle the gas tube and the locking lever to see if it will come out.

Sorry, wish I had better advice.

Thats good news.............But fer Gods sake get rid of that 10 rd mag or pin it.

Instead of pinning a mag to 5 rounds, which might involve damaging the mag (ie, drilling hole), could one add a block below the follower such that it cannot move past the 5 round mark? This would sort of be similar to the inserts that are put into a shotgun mag tube to reduce the number of shells to 3 when hunting. Would this be a legal option?

You can't temporarily block the magazine by blocking it with a semi automatic centre fire. Mag has to be "perminently" modified with a rivet or mechanical device that can't be easily removed. It is definitely not like putting a plug in a pump shotgun.

The non-permanent magazine block for shotguns only applies to hunting regulations, where a couple of minutes fiddling with the tube mag. is considered enough of a nuisance that you wouldn't ever remove it in the field. Right.

For the general Firearms Act and the Criminal Code, magazines must be limited in a permanent manner, by de-forming the case, by welding or epoxying a piece of metal, or by attaching a rivet (SOR 98-462 Part 4 S.3(5)). Otherwise it is a Prohibited Device, which has numerous serious Criminal offences associated.

I would immediately put a ‘hunting’ type block in there to cover my keister until I formulated a permanent solution. Note that you could likely go the rest of your life like this and never be found out for the evil criminal scum that you are, but I am not recommending the ownership of Prohibited Devices.

I believe that some`of the first SKS' imported into Canada after that stupid mag limit law was passed had the followers modified by welding a pin to the bottom of the follower so the mag could only accept 5 rounds(I don't know how long the pin has to be). This is the good way IMO to modify the magazine, as it doesn't show on the exterior. I think there's a photo somewhere in the stickies up top of the forum showing the modified follower.

Any modification must be a permanent one (that can't be removed without using tools) or else that mag is a prohibited device, AND it doesn't matter to the police if said device was owned or manufactured BEFORE the law came into effect.

Pin the magazine that solves that problem the gas system well just wiggle the bugger out and pry on it up sometimes pushing down brefore trying to turn it helps ie push down to take the tension off the gas system.

So you just push down on the gas system as you turn the pin then lift up when it lines up the flat part after that your done it should come right out.

It only comes out when it's in the right spot as it's round and flat at top (they are sometimes hard to get out)

The other option for the magazine is buy the 25 round tapco one that is pinned to 5 already.

No,,,You can get a Tapco mag into a wood stock with just a wee bit of a rub , and I mean just a wee bit on the inside of the stock.
