sks is this normal?

cleaning the cosmoline off my new to me sks, and found this little ragged hole at the base of my gas tube!

curious if this is normal or is it something that might need replacing?

that hole is where it releases the gas pressure to make the next cycle.
Actually, the gas hole is on the side of that tube. The hole illuminated by the flashlight is a manufacturing defect, but if it still works good don't worry about it. It is not uncommon to see that and should not affect the rifle's function. See thread above.:rockOn:
 
No weld it as it can cause drop of preasure issue and there for feeding/extracting issue's. Not a big job but still better safe than sorry just incase you have some slow burning ammo (old) or some sort of weak ammo hand loads for those sub sonic no hearing aid's required events ;)

I don't see how it would cause a pressure issue, its on the wrong end. By the time the piston makes it past the pressure release ports on the sides of the gas tube, its pretty much a done deal in the power stroke anyways.

I have high doubts that it would have any affect on anything at all really.
 
The reality is I don't have any real way to weld it anyways :D

Now if Satin wants to come down for the price of a case of beer I'd gladly let him weld it. Until then, I will make sure to not use 'light' loads (will mostly be using full surplus anyways) :D

No welding needed to be done there, just buy ammo and have fun:)

actually , this is a short stroke system so the piston never past the pressure release ports , some of the gas are pushed back into the barrel.

the ports are there to release the pressure behind the piston head so that means its not neccessary to weld the hole , its quite common.

Thank you for clarifying this, I was not aware that it did not go past them.

Regardless like you said this is a non issue.
